Radiator fan & A/C not working~any help appreciated

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

relay is one next to the unit you highlighted with the red square you last pic you posted. I don't bother. removing the old relay, just add the new one to the terminals underneath as per pic. Relay pin numbers shown on pic. You can test if your relay is faulty by bridging pins 87-30 on the circuit board. If a/c kicks in then relay is faulty.

Cool, thanks soooo much Will :D I'm going to get on that tomorrow first thing, it's the lads birthday today so won't get chance before but will come back and let you know how I get on. Oh, do you have any recommendations for make/type of relay to use (30 amp normally open?)? Thanks again it's really appreciated!!

Aint that the truth! :(

Neat solution there Will. 8)

I would have wimped out because I'd worry too much about overloading the relay driver with two coils, but I guess you've done it enough times to be comfortable with it

I use any 30a relay I lay my hands on. That one in the pic happens to be a dual position one with 87 and 87a terminals. Obviously only connected the 87 terminal.

I found that it is mostly the case that the original relay blows the coil so no real extra loading. Loading from 2 coils would probably be minimal anyway. Beats carving up the upper cover to get to the original relay... :cheesy: Original relay is quite whimpy for the job it is trying to do imo..

Interesting, I was expecting the contacts to have burned up since they definitely have a finite life.
Guess you have the perfect solution.

Today was the first chance I've had to check the car again, I'm convinced it's the pressure sensor, like Doggy's my condenser has a non return valve so the sensor was an easy option to check first. Looking around on various parts distributors sites and fleabay I can't seem to find a definite replacement. Mine has the part number 9632170780 and with the fleabay compatibility doodah thingy all I get is "does not match". I would hazard a guess at the Mahle ASE 15 000P sensor being the correct item but any guidance would be very much appreciated. My car is a 2003 2.0 HDI 110 Executive estate, not sure if the "auto" button on the control console denotes it has climate control or plain A/C as there is an A/C button also

Thanks again

Looks like the correct PSA part no. is 6453 Z3 for any car from late 2001 on, (the earlier cars had 6455 T2 or 6455 X5).
This does appear to match the Mahle part no. you quoted.
I agree the only eBay ad for a new part says it doesn't fit your car, but I guess the listing is wrong.

What makes you think it's the sensor?

Think it was hoping more than knowing Doggy, it was the way it went down, A/C working one day and then not the next and then not at all. Anyway the sensor looked liked the original one so thought what the heck, it's not super expensive so I'll change it and see what happens anyway........Anyway it didn't work

Was thinking I'd have a go at the relay but mine is nothing like the one in Wills pics and I wouldn't be able to tell what of the six pins was what on mine to do a piggy back job, I did order up a Tyco v23076-a3001-c132 relay as this is what's on my BSI and will try a complete swap out at the weekend hopefully.

I would certainly try bridging the common & normally open contact connections, (4 & 5) on the pcb and make sure the compressor clutch pulls in before trying to remove the old relay, particularly if it can be done without stripping the BSI down.

You're not going to be impressed if changing the relay doesn't help, or worse still something else gets broken or damaged in the process.
