bolted on top of the gearbox, underneath the thermostat hoousing, its black plastic with a 3mm black cable comming off it with one 10mm nut holding it into the gearbox, unplug it, and at the sensor plug end you should have 3 terminals, i think, get a multimeter and measure AC volts while trying to start the engine across the outer pins of the plug, you should get anything between 0.5volts up to 5volts, if you get nothing, use the multimeter to measure the resistance, if you have open circuit then replace the sensor, if not, take the sensor out and have a look in the hole (very hard to see) and turn the engine by hand you should what looks like i giant cog, eventually there will be a gap between the teeth, if this cog is broken anywhere, you have major problems
but the favorite is the tdc sensor

you need to measure the A/C voltage comming out of the sensor while trying to start

OK got it back in (TDC) and spun engine on 20v no reading. I will have to hope the internal cog is sound because unless I was one inch high and had better eye sight than the average cat there is no way I can see down that frigging hole!
By the by is it possible for the TDC sensor to short and blow because of water ingress?
The reason I ask is because once the air filter housing was removed I noticed water was dripping fron the thermostate bleed nipple. The cap was cracked, I have always had to put a small amount of water in on a regular basis. I had checked rad and hoses and never noticed this cap because it was obscured by air intake pipe. Swapped it for one of my valve caps!
Monday I will buy a new TDC sensor let you know what happens

yeah this is what kills the sensor on the 1.8, 2.0 and the turbo, but usually the thermostat housing leaks onto the sensor, if you got no reading it is most likely dead
but are you sure you measured A/C voltage not D/C?

thats border line, you need 0.5v to just about start so its hard to say, can you get hold of another sensor cheaply?
