Srange Behaviour of Radiator Fans

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Srange Behaviour of Radiator Fans

Post by Harshan »

Hi All,

This weird thing happened on yesterday while I was driving to work from home in the morning. Couple of times during the traffic I noticed the temp gauge hikes upto 100 and slightly pass the 100 point which I assume 103 degrees and then it drops. This happened few times and by the time I park the vehicle in the office premises, I noticed the temp is 98 but i couldn't hear the fans operating. So opened the hood and check, yes they weren't working but ideally it should work. Then what I did was pulled the plug of the temp probe to the ECU and bingo fans engaged at lower speed first and then increased the speed, which means fan relays are ok. But when I plug it in, fans were shut off though the engine was on working temperature.
Then I let the car to cool down a bit for about 2 hrs and then checked. started the car, waited until the engine gets on to working temperature and checked whether fans are working. Nope, they weren't engaging at all. even at 105!!. Then what I did was pulled the plug of temp probe again and let the fans to run for sometime while the engine kept running. temp went down as low as 70 degrees and all of a sudden fans disengaged, after few seconds they engaged again.. then disengaged.. this happened for a while. Then I shut the engine and plugged the temp probe connector back in place. and this time fans did engage when the temp reached 95 which is normal. and now still it keeps running fine, on the way I randomly checked whether they're working, yes now they do.. Still trying to figure out what went wrong. I might've ended up blowing the radiator, or water reservoir tank or couple of hoses..

Check out http://www.peugeotlogic.com/workshop/ws ... fanop1.htm

The fans cut in when you unplug that switch due to open circuit mode and they should be on fast. They should also cut in at 107C. High speed only works with the ignition on too.

It seems to me that your low speed fan functions aren't working. Maybe look at the wiring digram and try and work out whats different between the 2 circuits (low and fast).

It could however be a faulty component such as the control unit or the temp sensor giving funny signals. Try it with air con on and if it still won't engage at low speed, it is probably the control system playing up.
