I have a 2001 406 Exec auto, 152,000 miles. Had it since 7,000. Great car.
Last February I had a display and engine warning light saying Engine Antipollution System Defective.
The main dealer checked it, and reported "Unable to access ECU. Traced to poor contact at diag socket. cleaned and tightened terminals. OK now."
I've just had the same warning. Have booked car in again [I mess with computers not cars!] but had a peek under the bonnet. Thought I might check terminals etc and save a good few quid, if that is all it is.
Is the ECU in the plastic box thing at front right?
Car has been faultless apart from this niggle, and another electrical problem when water got in a rear light onto the connection for the CD autochanger. This effectively short circuited the engine management system. Advice was to disconnect the suto player, and that sorted it until the garage sealed the leak.
