a/c problems

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

a/c problems

Post by missmouse »

Hi, just joined as I am now proud owner of a 2000, 406 hdi.
Along with a few other problems i am having fun getting the a/c to work!
1st off the compressor's clutch coil was shorted out so Ive renewed that, regassed, all working If I apply 12V to the said coil. BUT.... it doesnt switch on when i switch it on. (no power getting from the wiring loom to the coil) Im guessing that when the coil went it blew a fuse somewhere & that is my problem-- I cant find that fuse!
Any ideas? I know some cars have extra fuses hidden under other fuseboxes etc.
Thanks,
Simon

Be careful fella because the 406 is famous for condenser failure at 7 years old and the lack of as pressure will 'hold off' the compresssor to protect it from wear. The pressure switch is to the left of the condenser and is part of the receiver/drier.

My money is on low/no gas.

definitely an electrical fault welton, the condenser has been replaced recently & Ive just had it professionally regassed (& evac, press test, new oil & gas) As I said, the system works if I apply 12V to the compressor clutch coil.
A/C is a fairly simple arangement really, apart from some (un necessary & overcomplicated!) controls over the years not a lot has changed in design for about 70 odd years!

try linking out the low pressure and high pressure switches, one of those could be faulty

Tried that too! we are convinced the fault must be at the "a/c control unit" where ever that is? I reckon there must be a fuse on this unit, at least I would HOPE there is a fuse on this to protect it in case of a fault at the compessor.
Anyone any idea where it hides?
I am suspecting UNDER the fuses at the battery but am worried about removing the top layer in case I lose my radio code. Is this likely does anyone know?
Haynes say the code will not be lost with a simple battery out/in.

With a 2000 there is no radio code as such. The radio is coded to the car.
