"sticky"speedo

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

hi

this is a common problem and one which I need to correct on my pug , there are some threads on here which cover this problem but I will try and help

1) check the back of the instrument panel for cracked or dry soldered joints, good first option if you are confident with a soldering iron.

2)There is a black ecu unit behind the glove box (size of packet of fags) some 406's may not have these so go to your local pug main dealer and they can take your vin number to confirm if your pug was fitted with one.

3)The speedometer transducer unit which is fitted just above the drive shaft on the gear box

hope this helps will be sorting mine out next week and will post my results :D

i have also seen on occasions the black backing with the numbers comes away from the base of the speedo and fouls the needle so the speedo gets stuck

Mine's been very intermitant recently... hardly working ever but once in a while it'll come to life for a quick dance and die again.

I changed a few of the dash bulbs last night and think I must have disturbed the problem area as it was working ALL the way to work this morning... interesting... im going for a dodgy connector wiring.

Twas happening on mine too

A new dash unit (from scappy at a cost of £35) cured the problem good and proper!! - took me about 15 mins to remove old old one and fit new one

I spoke too soon... gone again!

On that note Mike, is the mileage recorded by ECU or dash clock unit? I just dont like the idea of having to pay out to get the mileage re-done.

I had a look on their site to see if they sold them but couldnt see anything - that part number doesnt look like an ECP part number either.

Hang fire, i'll give the local branch a call.

Right, it is listed on ECP's systems, part number 494735010 BUT there is no stock anywhere in the company and would be a special order (and thus would probably take a little while to come in). Price quoted at £35.69. iirc thats around what the stealerships charge anyway.

Pug trialed mine by substitution. It was duff of course. I'm thinking that a big part of maintaining these ever-so-bleedin'-complex cars is knowing when to stop guessing and call in the experts. This doesn't necessarily mean Pug, that's like going to your GP for heart surgery.
