No Rear Foglight... Help needed!

Hi,

While installing my retro-fit front fogs ('96 1.9 TD LX D8 saloon) I noticed that the rear foglight switch no longer lights up when depressed and the rear foglight also doesn't come on.

I have so far installed the front fogs and the extra black relay under the dash that runs them. I have yet to install a front foglight switch (BTW it is a switch, not a stalk - this is confirmed by the handbook and a connector behind the blank where it goes - possibly this is because this was one of the first D8s?).

I have checked the rear bulb, switch, switch connections and fuse (number 18) and all seems good. I have also tried removing the front fog relay to see if my in-progress retro-fit was causing a problem. No joy with any of that.

Are there any other relays, or areas that I can check, because I can't think of anything else that could cause this except a problem with the loom somewhere . Does anyone have any ideas?

Not much of an idea but did you try those places with a meter or a test lamp?

Not yet, as I ran out of lunchtime!

I'm going to try and dig a bit more tomorrow - including disconnecting all the retro-fit parts and seeing what that does. I just wanted to see if there was a rear foglight relay elsewhere in the car, so I could check it at the same time.

Out of interest do you know what the other black relay under the dash controls? I'm trying to eliminate anything that may have been disturbed from the list of possible causes.

All i could find out about the other relay was it ran 'daytime running lights' as they were never fitted.

I drove around for days using this relay in the fog light position till i could get another relay.

Thanks for that, looks like that isn't it then.

I can't see how anything I've done could knock the rear light out. Might have to get an auto-sparky out if I have no joy tomorrow.

Are you sure you have not dislodged any wiring from the dash switch when fitting the front fog light switch?

Both front & rear fogs work of the stalk on my D8,but whilst checking for power on the heated screen switch i did lose power to the heater lights (loose connector)

Rear fog switch is on the centre console. Front fog switch (when it arrives) will go on the lower right dash panel next to the steering wheel (next to the headlight adjustment and instrument panel brightness wheels).

As it's been hooning it down outside today I'll need to wait for some good weather to investigate this, but i've had a good poke aroung the rear fog switch and it's secure (never went near it either). The only thing I can think of is that the front fog switch is needed to complete a circuit and until then none of the FLs will work, but I doubt it tbh.

Just try to be methodical, test it where you can and zero in on the problem. You'll at least need a test lamp but a multimeter is much better. It's probably something to do with what you've been doing but there's always a chance it's not.

Yes it was!! When I was installing the new panel that holds the front fog switch i'd disconnected the switch connector from its securing mount on the old panel. On examination there was a contact that shorts out two of the pins when the connector was stored there. On one of the blanks on the new panel there was a similar contact. When I plugged the connector into it all was well. Obviously the shorted pins complete the circuit in the absence of an switch allowing al fogs to operate.

Nice when it's something simple! Thanks for all the advice. I'm also constantly being surprised by how well thought out the D8's electrics are in terms of stowage, accessibility and general neatness. The Toyota I use for week-ends usually needs right-angled fingers and a lot of effort to correctly strip things out without causing damage. Having re-wired most of its dash I'm beginning to realise how much beter Peugeots's Torx-heads are compared to standard positive drive bolts and screws - so much less chance of stripping them.
