Radio Dimmer Wire

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Radio Dimmer Wire.

Hi I have just fitted a JVC KD AVX2 head unit to my 99 V plate 406.
Does anybody know if i can auto dim the JVC when i turn on the lights ? and which wire i need to connect to the dimmer cable.

Thanks

Mark

Don't they work by applying 12v to the dimmer wire on the radio? If that's the case, take a lead from the headlight feed on the stalk connector and splice it to the dimmer wire. May be worth sticking a meter on the connector to make sure which wire is the switched live.

I thought D9 stalks spoke digital to the BSI, making this impossible?

Actually I'm surprised it doesn't already work, I mean it's more effort to get the signal through the looms on a D8 (which they do) than it would be to pass it from the BSI on a D9

Don't the pre-multiplex versions use the old style stalks though?

Wasn't the switchover on the D8.5? I think someone should write a letter to Mr Peugeot and see if they can find out a bit of 406 history :)

I remember reading a post on here not so long ago about non-multiplex D9's using the same stalk, the design history would be an interesting read!

The standard head units do it by default, so i expect the wire/signal is all ready there just a case of finding it. Time to get you multi meter out.

the D9 switched over to the com2000 system around 2000/2001. My 99 d9 has the old style indicators (thank fully as i have a new one), It still has a BSI, its just not quite as advanced.

Have already checked for any voltage changes when the lights switched on from the ISO and there is only the switched ignition.
I will probably just tag the wire onto the ashtray lamp,i assume that will give me the 12v to the orange dimmer cable.
If not i will just have to stick with the timed dimmer built into the head unit.

Yes that'll work, I forgot about the ashtray light! Or the cigar lighter backlight!

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Hi.

Tagging wire to ashtray lamp does work and dims radio, but has the side effect of causing the dashboard and dial display to illuminate when key inserted and turned to position one.Any ideas, have disconnected wire and all is fine again.

That's because the cigarette lighter is powered from the 'accessory' position of the ignition and not the light switch.

Ok.

So why does the dashboard display illuminate when i connect the radio dimmer wire ?
As far as i can see the ashtray light only illuminates with the lights are switched on.
