Clunking Mirror Extravaganza

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Clunking Mirror Extravaganza

Post by steve_earwig »

Is this the right place for this? Who cares...

I've just given my D9 its first proper polish (apart from the damaged panels). Half way through I had to move it out of the sun, I had the mirrors pushed forwards to polish behind them and when I started the car both gave a mighty great bang. I was wondering what it was, staereo? When I finished I pushed the mirrors back (they seemed a bit wobbly) and when I started the car they both shifted straight while giving out a whirring noise followed by another bang.

My service book's in Italian (and I seem to have mislaid it  ), Service Box still won't let me see pics, what's going on? My D8 never did that, have I got those tippy-out-the-way mirrors or something?

The glass moves fine. I'm thinking maybe they're meant to be self-folding (counldn't think what they were called, thanks :cheesy: ) but something's bust, I'm not sure how they're meant to work though, are they meant to fold when the ignition's turned off?

Aha! I found my handbook: "Retrovisori ripiegabili elettricamente. Con il contatto inserito, portare il comando 6 sulla posizione A".
"Retrovisori foldable electrically. With the inserted contact, to carry commando 6 on the position To"

So that's all clear then :?

Perfectly clear then!

Sorry, I'd assumed you had brought your car when you moved
Maybe Haynes? :?

Apparently if you register details at peugeot.co.uk you can download the user manual in PDF

Because you drive the automotive equivilent of The Antiques Roadshow? :P :P

I've been out and had a fiddle, I think the handbook's telling me the ignition has to be on and I have to pull the knob backwards but nothing happens, no whirs, no bangs, total silence. I tried with the key in all positions and even with the engine running. However, I pulled the driver's side mirror in by hand and when I turned the ignition on it came back out with a whir and a bang. It's not the sort of thing that I'd have looked for and I don't suppose I'd use it much but it pi$$es me off having something that doesn't work on a car.

I guess it's either the switch (although I think it's the same switch that moves the mirrors down), there's two motors and one of them's fried, the one motor doesn't work in reverse or none of the above.

Anyone know where the motor(s) is/are?

Them's fighting words earwig :P

I'd say whip the mirror off and investigate; it's got to be around the hinge mechanism :?

But who's got the bnetter car then? If I register my D8 it's going to be a hard job to stop myself selling the '9...

you twist the knob, either left to right, as if to select one of the mirror's but turn it further, it fees like it will break the knob but it doesnt, thats how it folds in

I eventually found the page on Pug's website, it won't let you download the whole manual or even save the page you're viewing! On top of that there appear to be no D8 manuals on there! (not that it matters to me, I've got mine in English  )

Yup, James has got it, turn the knob right 'round so that it faces backwards and in they'll come, you need the ignition on..... 8)

Ok steve, as james rightly said, the mirrors fold in when the knob is turned all the way round to the back, and they are returned when the knob is replaced. This does not move the glass at all. The clunk / bang you heard does dound like the gears stripping or knocking. i had this on my old passat. i just removed the glass and manually grabbed the gears and reset them back in. it sounded bad, i thought i had buggad them, but they were fine after that.
My mirror glass dropped of when i did a clean of the car. i have relocated it but it is a poor fit. and i dare not force it any more. as the headed blue tinted glass looks pricey. And i know they are fragile things. hope you sort it soon fella.
