Key fob ????
Seems to be a lot of confusion over key fobs..... Ive just broken mine ...the button has broke off and ive lost it (its been soldered a few times) ...
Ive got a 406 exec 1996 2.0 petrol with immobiliser keypad. Can i buy a replacement keyfob off flea bay and swop the blades over and use the normal programming method to get it work (key in ignition press the button and all that)
Any help appreciated..

Re: Key fob ????
Not quite. There's two electronic mechanisms at work - one is the radio transmitter in the key which deals with locking/deadlocking/etc and the other is a passive RF transceiver. The transceiver is a little (usually) black bit stuck in the key plastic which talks to the car via a little aerial ring around the ignition barrel. You'll need to make sure this is in the new key.
However, I am under the impression that a key, once coded at the factory, can't be re-coded to another car. The 'reset'/'programming' procedure is likely to be just re-synchronising the rotating codes sent by the radio transmitter.
The truth is that Peugeot used a few different key methods over the life of the 406 so it could be worth a try, save buying a new key, ignition barrel, door locks, receiver and ECU

Dammit, there I was in the vet's this morning when I spotted their chip reader, I should have tried it on my ignition key!

So how is this tranciever powered??? if i take all the circuit board and batteries out the key the car still starts? (when i put in the immobiliser code obviously).... Im heading towards an aftermarket alarm that locks my car and windows i think

Re: Key fob ????
It's a transponder, the same sort of thing they put in dogs, it uses the power of the transmitter to send a response. The transmitter/reciever coil is around the ignition lock on the car.

Re: Key fob ????
I guess that's a no
(unless a previous owner's binned it). I got 2 keys with my D8, one with and one without, what's the point of that?

Re: Key fob ????
cant decide what to do....im really missing getting out my car and it locking my doors and windows (especially in this heat we got at the mo) Wonder how hard it would be to find the wires for the central locking and elec windows for an after market alarm (already got an alarm with central locking and windows closure box - finding the wires on the car is putting me off) ????

Re: Key fob ????
So that is a D8 - the chip in key is a D9 enhancement doing away with the keypad.MiniPug wrote:Ive got a 406 exec 1996 2.0 petrol with immobiliser keypad
Visit the scappy and pick up a matched pair of keys and alarm receiver (from a D8 of course)
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

We've been here before ;) Some higher-end D8s had a transponder - the exec turbo does, but the v6 exec doesn'tV6Exec wrote:So that is a D8 - the chip in key is a D9 enhancement doing away with the keypad.MiniPug wrote:Ive got a 406 exec 1996 2.0 petrol with immobiliser keypad

Wrong type of key, which leads on to wrong solutionsmjb wrote:Not quite. Re: Key fob ????
You've got me thinking here... I've got a D8 Tubby Exec and the immobiliser has never disarmed off the keyfob despite putting in the code to enable auto-disarm. Should there have been a transponder chip in the key or is there something else I'm missing?

Re: Key fob ????
Yep. I'll take a pic when I can get off my arse. I had mine setup so you pressed the big button to unlock the doors, then you had 30 seconds after opening the door to start the engine otherwise it'd re-immobilise itself. If that happened I could turn the ignition off and on, then press the big button again at which point the keypad light turned from red to green and the car could be startedteamster1975 wrote:You've got me thinking here... Oh bollocks. I don't stand any chance of getting that working thenmjb wrote:Yep. I'll take a pic when I can get off my arse. Someone must have transferred the guts of the key to another body & forgotton the transponder

I'd be grateful to see a pic anyhow, you did have the 2 button plip didn't you Matt?
