This 406 thing seems to be losing it's appeal quickly.
For your info:
Fan motor cut out. Returned home and could not turn the ignition switch off. Stalled car, disconected battery and removed ignition switch and lock barrel. Found it melted again! This is the second switch I have fitted. The last one was 12 months ago. These cars are s*ite!
More than motoring - it's a hobby. Every second week end up to your nuts in engine guts!
Sorry about the rant but it's the straw that broke the camels bloody back!

Re: Ignition switch - again!
Something must be shorting out to cause that, probably not the fan motor. Oh, how I love intermittant faults

Re: Ignition switch - again!
Sourced an ignition switch from on 02 hdi estate.
The switch has 1 wire less than my old switch. After tracing the missing wire, it appears to be the main power switch to the cabin blower. My car has climate control (Or peugeots attempt at that). The blower is controlled through the climate control panel.
I have linked the switch out for the cabin blower. I have checked current draw by cabin fans when the car is both running and stopped. Running 2 amps - 32 amps (depending on fan speed) engine off 0 Amps. This proves to me that the ignition switch is not needed in conjunction with climate control.
Can anyone verify this? I can only assume the switched contacts on the ignition switch are for cars with a manual fan control.
For info both ignition switches which I have changed have failed as a result of the blower contcts over heating and the switch plastic components fusing in the closed on position.
Any feedback appreciated

Re: Ignition switch - again!
Get a NEW correct switch, second hand bits like this just don't cut the mustard when the whole car depends on it to work
If it were a short it would of died ages ago, or at least blown a fuse; but now I read the last paragraph, the heater blower must be the problem, drawing too much current, try another and see what it does.

I was wondering about that 32 amps too (384 watts?), but then I'm not sure what they're meant to take. I know the rad fans are powerful enough to jump out of your hands when they start up but I'm just not sure about the heater one.

Oh yes it's a powerful bugger on full!diesel.weasel wrote:This proves to me that the ignition switch is not needed in conjunction with climate control.

On mine I think the blower turns off and on between aux and ignition on positions. I think there's also a requirement for the engine to be running (like the heated rear windscreen) for the a/c circuit to be active, although it may well just throw the compressor clutch solenoid regardless...

I thought the radiator fans only had 30A fuses?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
