Battery Change

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Post by londoner1 »

Can any point the the CORRECT way to change the battery on a 406 hdi as i gather its a bit complicated?

I think its the following but needs confrimation:

1) swich on iginition
2) press and hold down teh alarm button by the hand brake for 2 secs.
3) wait for the side lights to flash 3 times.
4) switch off ignition and change battery.

WTF? you forgot No.5 "stand on one leg and turn around 3 times"

All I know is that I have successfully disconnected my 1999 HDi's battery numerous times without any trouble (apart from having to set the clock again).

The only advice I would follow is to perhaps have the doors and windows shut beforehand and follow the good practice of disconnecting the earth lead first, and reconnecting last. Also leave the car disconnected for, say, 30mins to allow the BSi to die off just incase it doesn't like the sudden wake up again (although this is being a bit fussy now).

Never heard of all that stuff you wrote above, but see what others say too :cheesy:

The tubby's alarm triggers if the battery's removed without disabling it.

I think there's a section in the handbook which tells you how to do it

Thnaks all, keep the replies coming.

The reason why i ask is this car is very 'sensitive' and i have heard nighmares stories about just changing the plain old battery, people have had to tow their cars to the dealer and have had to reprogramme their keys to get the damn car running again. I just can't beleive you have to go through all this just to change a battery???

:arrowu: That's more so if they are jump started; they don't like that at all; you can scramble the bsi.
Changing the battery shouldn't be a problem at all though!

More reason why the D9 sucks :cheesy: keep 'em coming in... 8)

One thing to watch out for is the stereo will need a code if you disconnect the battery - make sure you have it

Ah that's right, the code's inbuilt and checked against the BSI meaning replacement needs re-coding  :cheesy:

Personally my pugs radios haven't lasted longer than the drive home before being ripped out in favour of my mp3 playing goodness 8)

Neither do most D8s... I think you have to use the stereo buttons or something to input the code for it

I have a feeling it's the non-v6 execs/GLXs which have 'em. Probably down to the ECU as the v6 has a bosch mp7.something
