Speedo on the blink

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Speedo on the blink

Post by tonyhat »

Hi
My speedo works intermittenly
Can any clever person tell me if this is the first sign of the sensor starting to pack up
Is there anyway of checking the clock, wiring or the sensor.
I have a 406 lL 1997 petrol 1761cc
Hope this enough info
Many thanks Tony

Are you sure it's electronic? On some there's a control box behind the glovebo that goes on the blink and there's been a fair few dry joints on the clocks (need magnifying glass, fine soldering iron and endless patience).

Hi and welcome Tony! As Steve says there are a couple of causes; I had the 1.8LX, same age as yours.
I had to resolder the back of the instrument cluster which cured mine but as Steve mentioned there is a speedo control module tucked up behind the glove box about the size of a fag packet; I've seen a few posts where people replaced this & it cures it too. Off the top of my head they are £30-40 but don't quote me!
Your other option is the speedo sender which is on top of the gearbox but I've not heard of many of these failing.

Good luck getting it fixed! :)
