ABS problem?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

ABS problem?

Post by descanso »

Hi,

I have this problem which doesn't sound too worrying, but I need to fix it.

On my dials, the yellow lamp has come on which shows the car sliding on it. At the same time my ABS has stopped working, the wheels lock easily.

At first, the light would only sometimes come on, and now it's always on.

Any clues?

Thanks!

Thought the ABS light was red, and the yellow one you describe is the traction control?

The yellow sliding car symbol is the traction control! this was an option from 2002 I think. It's trying to tell you it can't function because there's something wrong with the ABS (or vise versa) the traction control uses the ABS and it's wheel sensors to detect and control variations in each wheel's rotation speed.

You'll need a global test down at your friendly dealers I'm affraid.

The ABS system is pretty robust though, don't hear of many of them going wrong. Have you checked the fuses? Other than that my guess would be a dodgy sensor.

Just to clarify - the car is 406, 1999 (old phase D8) 1.8i. The car DOES NOT have traction control as far as I know, it wheel-spinned with not struggle since the day I bought it.

The light that appears is AMBER, and it does look like TC... but I dont understarnd why it's there.

When the light is ON, ABS shows no signs of life, however when it's off the ABS DOES WORK. It happens rarely that ligh goes out, but when it does ABS works.

This is real pain in the a--!

Just a tought, could this possibly be a message that my front brakes need replacement. I've been informed that there is a system that does that, just not sure how it works and how exatcly it is linlked with ABS system.

I can't believe I've never took any notice of this but my 1999 D9 has the Amber slidy car symbol too  it comes on briefly at start up. The book says it's the ABS warning light and can sometimes be accompanied by the red (!) handrake symbol indicating a malfunction of the braking system.

The Slidy car symbol alone indicates a fault with the abs but normal servo-assisted braking remains.

The book also says STOP IMMEDIATELY and contact a PEUGEOT dealer in big shouty font
