Electric Windows -- Not-- STILL

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Electric Windows -- Not-- STILL

Post by SwedishBlue »

Hi again.
Still no success with the windows. Checked all the earths I can. Earth is getting to the drivers door switch. Everything is dry, no sign of water in the past. The fuses are fine. None of the switches work any of the windows. Symptoms the same as before, not a sign of any window activity on any of the switches and as you operate the switch the door card lights go out and when you release, they come back on again. Has anyone got any more ideas, please. Do not want to take it to a stealer. Cheers

You'll have to forgive us as the diagrams we have are the vague and usually inaccurate ramblings found in Haynes. If they're in any way close to reality then the only common point on both circuits is, of course, the bsi. If all four door card lights go out with every switch you press then it's not very likely to be two earthing points.

I was hoping you'd tell us what's on the light circuit, the earth on the switch may in fact die when the switch is operated and I presume you've got that disconnected to test the earth, better to test the light and see what the feed does when the switch is operated - does the feed die or does the earth? You'd have to test between the two wires on the light and a known good earth on the car of course.

Failing that do not take it to a dealer - it's an auto electrician you'll be wanting.

Done more checking and have more accurate symptoms but stiff no sign of (window) life. First I realised that that the 'A' switch (which I assume is the auto drop/close, drivers window) does not cause the door lights to go off. Secondly I found that the drivers door light does not go off when the others do. The driver door is open for these tests. The other three door lights lose their feed (not earth) when any of the other window switches are operated. If the drivers door is closed and another door is open, only the drivers door light goes out when a window button is pressed/lifted. The large button with a X on it on the drivers switch panel, I assume stops the windows from working as these symptoms only happen when it is not pushed in. If in, nothing happens at all. I hope that this will make some sense to someone as I am losing patience :x

I don't blame you. I still can't figure it out from these feeble wiring diagrams, it's obviously not an earth but I can't see why it would be the BSI as they're two seperate circuits (as far as I can tell), one for the lights and one for the lifters. Unless the timing parts are in the same place.. The only common stuff is the wiring, I know you said nothing's wet but did you see this? It all must go through there. Failing that it's auto electrician time I'm afraid :(

I had this problem! After taking the switch out carefully I found that the bottom half of the switch had come away from the the top half very slightly. Cured by snapping the two halfs together, problem solved :cheesy: You could also check that none of the wires aren't broken as they come out of the door into the pillar.

Thanks for that. I am pretty sure that the switches are ok, ie together, but will check again and never thought of the wires as they exit the door. Well worth a look. Cheers
