speedometer problem

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

speedometer problem

Post by fritters »

can anyone advise me on fixing the speedo on my 1999 406 1997cc diesel it does not register, it is the gearbox which is fitted with a speedometer drive as opposed to the one with a transducer,i looked it up in haynes manual but there is no information they just advise you to see a mechanic. i seen on this web page some reference to a box situated behind the glove compartment but im wary about messing about with things i dont know about as it usually ends up costing me twice as much.

Umm, you have an HDi with a cable speedo? Nowt queer as Peugeot... There won't be a box on it if it is and you're back to old technology (hooray!): Did it do a lot of flicking before it went?

It's either the gearbox drive (unusual), the speedometer head (less unusual) or the cable (possibly favourite). If the cable's routed in any tight angles there's a nylon sleeve inside the cable that can wears out, the cable inner becomes worn, frays, catches (hence the flicking needle) and breaks. Also, cable inners can sometimes fall out of engagement with the head.

Re: engine cuts out

Post by fritters »

hi i have a 1999 406 2litre diesel which has an intermittent problem in that it decides not to start up sometimes in the morning sometimes after it has been running perfectly well for a couple of hours and quite often when i am actually driving which can be a bit scary. i have replaced the battery although it was ok.i have had the alternator checked out,all the obvious things. a friend suggested it might be a safety cut out because i get a message about my brake fluid being too low, which it is not.the previous owner must have had the same problem because there is a reset button which he has fitted to the right side of the engine area for convenience this most times gets the car started again except when i have run the battery down.i read a post in the knowledge page from Teamster advising a BSI reset which i have just done but i will have to wait and see if it happens again.can anyone tell me what BSI stands for ?also if anyone has any advice i will be most obliged

bsi is body systems interface i believe.
Its function is to control all the electrical stuff inside the car like the courtesy lights, dials, climate control and radio can also be affected by it, it sits above the fusebox. The reset button sounds odd, ive never seen one the bsi reset is a procedure. So someone else on here might be able to shed light on a solution to the problem.

BSI = Boite de Servitude Intellegente - remember, your car is French

Roughly translated into English this means "Clever Services Box", but Peugeot UK refer to it as the "Built-in Systems Interface" in order to keep the original acronym.

I would also appreciate advice on the bsi. For a time i had ALL my dash clocks flicker, go off then come back on again. Now i have no clocks at all and have been told by someone who came to fix what i thought was the Engine management system that i have to replace the dash then take to peugeot dealer to have it all reset. I would love to be able to avoid the £400 cost and do it myself, I have a 2.0 GLX petrol on a T (1999). so if anyone can please help.

yes your bsi sounds like its went mad, fortunatley i tracked the problem in mine down to extra lights i added, so if you have added anything electrical then take them out, and then the bsi may go back to normal which isnt an instant thing, after taking my footwell lights feed off the puddle lights the bsi didnt return to normal for a few hours.
Failing that then its a new bsi, id like to say you could get one cheaper by going to a breakers but i dont know enough about them bar they are a curse of a thing to put in a car.
