Key fob Question

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Key fob Question

Post by dmonkey82 »

Basically, my pug came with to keys, and you have to use both of them.

One has no button on it for the central locking, which is used to open the doors.
The other has the button(which actually doesnt work atm, more on that in a min!) this is used for the ignition and for the glove box etc.

I've noticed that all the door handles are colour coded, with the exception of the front passenger, which is black. I'm thinking that maybe it has been broken into or something in the past (the previous owner dying recently, means I cant actually confirm this brilliant, if a bit obvious bit of detective work!).

Is it just a case of replacing the battery, in the latter key, so I dont have to mess about with 2, as I constantly get them mixed up(which is a daily occurance!).

I know this poses the problem of getting locked out, should the new fob battery die, but I can live with that(i'll probably have it on me anyway).

Hope this makes sense,cheers, Jon(dmonk).

**UPDATE**
Put new battery in fob still no joy, should the light work on it when the button is pressed?

If so, is this a sign of the fob being dead?

All feedback will be much appreciated, thank you x

Yes it should. The buttons can go dicky; it happened on both of my 406's. If you're careful and you've got a needle tipped soldering iron you can remove the button & split it to clean it. Be careful you get all the solder off or you'll lift the pads off and have to set it in epoxy and bridge it with wire like I did

Your buttonless key probably exists because something's gone wrong with one or more of the locks and the barrel(s) have been changed. To do it "right" they'd have had to order new door locks, new ignition switch, a new central locking ECU, immobiliser (if fitted) and 2 keys - couple of grands worth easy, so they've probably put in barrels from a 306 or something.

You MAY be able to change your key's battery and get it re-synced to the car (use the search box at the top for the procedure).
