Disconnecting battery later D9's

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Disconnecting battery later D9's

Post by Doggy »

Does anyone know the definitive answer on whether you can disconnect the battery from a later D9, without losing plip operation or other problems?
Thinking specifically about this thread. Haynes suggests you need to de-activate the alarm before disconnecting battery, but does anyone absolutely know whether doing that first avoids the problem?

The reason for disabling the alarm is that disconnecting the battery will trigger it (at least in D8s) and leave you with no way to stop the racket :D

Yes, I can see the sense in that, but I didn't understand how Soops came to have problems when changing her battery. I've no immediate need to take mine off, just thinking better to find out first......

some systems have small backup batteries to hold settings or whatnot, guess hers must be dead

in any case when disconnecting the battery i'd recommend using one of those 'memory saver' things that take a 9v battery and plug into the cigarette lighter socket

I think I would frigg up another battery with jump leads onto the battery wire clamps whilst you do the swap?

Just found this little internet how-to.......http://www.tayna.co.uk/tutorials/change ... o-code.php

Just follow my instructions, the same ones listed in the "tutorial"

I always use a secondary battery source, ie, another battery connected by wires to the original battery.

It works every time and is essential for some computer systems.

The battery fitted in the cig lighter/12volt supply is ok, but you can get unreliable connections with these and can lose codes/computer function.

Thanks for the helpful comments guys. If I were taking the batery off to charge or swap it for a replacement, I would certainly set up a secondary power source to prevent data loss etc. as you all sensibly recommend. This does leave a bit of an enigma if you had to do any jobs where disconecting the battery is really advisable.
On my last car, I tried to start it, starter just clicked with smoke & strong acid smell from under the bonnet - I disconnected the battery quick, got it off & away from car PDQ, just pausing to fetch full-face visor first  These things can happen to you, just thought it's prudent to know how you would be fixed if you had no choice but to disconnect.

Yet other people have only done it once and had problems. It does seem a bit stupid that a basic job like disconnecting/reconnecting a battery could cause problems, it screams poor design. I once bodged together a car alarm (for the hell of it) using a 555 timer chip, every time I disconnected the battery and reconnected it the flash from when the earth terminal touched blew it up, that's 'cos it was basically rubbish. Not sure what Peugeot's excuse is.

I removed the battery from my 110 HDI to do the clutch (see seperate thread), I just opened the bonnet - keys removed- & left it for 10 minutes before disconecting it. Two days later put it back on and started no bother & everything working OK.

Thanks for that djp. If I have to take mine off to swap the battery etc. I'll use a secondary one as folks suggest, if the car needs to have the battery disconnected to make something safe then I'll follow your method. 8)

Good news too, maybe Soops was just unlucky...

Sounds like a proper pain :frown: I've never fixed one on a Pug, but I'm sure I saw some stuff on here about dealing with transponders & such.
