Indicator fault

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Indicator fault

Post by djp30djp »

One of our 110 Execs has developed a habit of the nearside indicator coming on by itself when the ignition is first turned on.
The switch apears to function properly & as soon as the switch is lifted for right turn everything is normal again until the ignition is switched off again?
Any ideas anyone?

It's an age thing :supafrisk:
Newer cars, (from about 2001, I think), have the COM2000, which is an integrated stalk assembly for all functions, while older cars have separate stalks for lights/indicators and wiper/washers. The older ones are easy & relatively cheap to replace, whereas theCOM2000 is expensive & involves removing the steering wheel

Do a search for COM2000 if you think your car could be new enough, (I'm not certain of changeover date) and see.

OK, The only differance I can see is that some have the horn switch on the stalk but my horn is on the airbag on the steering wheel. The switch works lights inc front&rear fog, dip, indicators but not the horn. My wiper switch looks different but maybee because of rain sensing wipers?
The indicator switch function properly & feels as it should & the fault only happens when theignition has been switched off.

I reckon you've got the COM2000 djp. From what I gather they're not repairable although I've never got my hands on one. What year is the car?
I also spotted this on ebay; it's untested but may be worth a look.

The car is a 2000(X) 110 Exec Estate & yes I saw that on e-bay too, but I thought "someone probably had to buy a new switch & trying to get some money for the faulty one" or am I just cynical?
Anyway I'm going to wait & see how it develops, as I say it only happens when the ignition is first turned on &it may cure itself like the faulty wipers on one of the other 406's did.
Thanks anyway.

My indicator stalk (COM2000) has been faulty for a while, left indicator comes on when you have just turned right and straightened up, I have been quoted about £100 plus vat by BBA Reman....www.bba-reman.co.uk...to rebuild my old unit, unfortunately, not practical as my wife uses the car each day for work...50 mile round trip.

Thanks for the Aussiefrogs link.

Anyone attempting to remove and store an airbag, please take care, they are very dangerous items.

You're probably right, it'd be alright if you could get a duff one for peanuts and strip it to see if it can be repaired!

It's a long shot, but I've seen some references to damp affecting multipole connectors under the carpets and making the BSI do strange things. Could be worth checking out.

I've found someone selling new ones on e-bay for £110 which isn't too bad I suppose, but as I say I will leave it for a bit & see if it fixes itself. The wipers on the other one had a fit for about a month & would only wipe five times & stop mid screen, no matter what position the switch was in. Move the switch to another position & the same thing happened again.
That was nearly a year ago now & they have been fine ever since?

STOP! Don't buy a COM2000. If your car is a 2000 then it has the older type controls. My 406 is a 2000, it has the horn on the wheel but still has the old controls.

My indicator often pops on when i start the car but it will turn off once i fiddle the switch. Its not a big deal as long as it doesn't turn on when driving along. If you really want to replace it then this is what you need.

(Don't worry about the fact that it came from a coupe. Shouldn't matter)

Yes Eoin your right, thanks for that, I was having a look to make sure & having lowered the steering wheel & lifting it back up again it's working normally again. Must be A N other bad connection. So far between the cars I've had self healing indicators, wipers & side airbag warning light ( every time my wife moves the seat that comes on, but I can't find which of the many connectors is for the side airbag?).
