I've just been under the drivers footwell of my non-multiplexed D9 and what do I find?

A BLOODY BSI!!!

WTF? ARGH! NOOOOOOO!

What the hell is the BSI doing? I did wonder about the sound of the indicators, sounded odd for a relay. So what's the story with these things? Is it the same as a multiplexed system except without the COM2000 stalks? Or is it just plugged into the harness not doing much? (please!!!)

The early D9's were non multiplex but had BSi's (like mine) where all the driver functions are routed through like lights, indicators, wipers, central locking, mileage etc etc.

Multiplexing (as I understand) is the multi-function use of the same wiring groups so the wire that does the rear indicator can also work the reversing light etc etc (less wiring in the car).

Multilexed D9's came out to play in 2002 ish (when they started catching fire).

I think the reason modern cars have BSi's is to enable manufacturers to tailor the numerous different models with optional extras but without the need to wire the cars any different (kind of plug and play for cars).

Which reminds me, I must get my new indicator stalk and get my BSI programmed for a trip comp. 8)

Don't worry mjb, I've had two 2000 406's (not multiplexed) and have lots of relatives with 2000's and 2001's and i've never heard of a single electrical issue.

So the whole D9 electrical gremlin issue isn't true :) But the real issue may lie in early examples of multiplex wiring

My dads multiplexed 607 however........ :evil: :evil:
2000 D9 Coupé 2.0 SE EW10J4 Scarlet Red - 5 litres of oil gone in 500 miles!!! Time for a new coupe me thinks

I must say that with regards to my interior electreeks - wipers, locking and whatnot my BSi'd 1999 406 has been abolutely perfect - I've not even had a single dash bulb go :cheesy:

My car has always been kept very clean inside which I think helps and I've been lucky to not have any water leakage too :|

The BSI is an interface for the CAN bus - it has a two twisted wire (High & Low) Pair signal wires. It works by sending packets of code to different things it controls - saves on wiring and is supposed to be sensitive to priorities in what it serves. Only theory buffs like me are allowed to talk about this but I make an exception for you. Ensure you keep that well dry since if you get any water near the wires it will F..K up encoding in the BSI and you will need the stealer to pair it back up if it goes belly up _£500 for 4-5 hrs work. That's not including buying any parts. I should say that the BSI was a early attempt at using CAN bus and I believe was directed at the ABS - other things less important were not routed from the unit to the rear for example. Multiplexing takes most of the other items on.
It's been used on Trucks for some time to carry controls a long way - down long trailers etc. It sends a code packet with an identifier to each module - say heated rear window or ABS asking what state are you in - the module then sends back a response - the sender then sends an instruction if required ie on or off and are you working ok. This is going on all the time you turn the key on. ABS will always take priority since the system is load sensitive and will slow down as more is put on it. Some algorithms allow the codes to be interpreted even if one of the wires has been cut. There is no earthly reason why the makers have to use protectionist measures for it to function except to make money. I had one go down on me and could not get a signal to my oscilloscope to read the codes because I could not interrogate the BSI. Maybe one other reason - to stop inexperienced people playing about. - One guy I know wired his Merc up for a trailer and the system lit up like a christmas tree on the dash. The clever bits can detect if a lamp is out etc but also if an extra load is put on.
