CAN'T CLOSE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

CAN'T CLOSE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW

Post by marco2002 »

Hi everyone
Had a problem with the car yesterday Peugeot 4906 hdi w reg. The battery is on the way out so i'll be getting a new when on tuesday when i get paid. The problem is when the battery went a bit flat the other day the drivers side window was open when it went flat i went to close it after the breakdown guy came out and the engine was running but the window would not open or close. I did a quick check and the fuse that supplies the drivers side window with power which is a 20A one according to the haynes manual is OK. i did see in the book that if the battery power is cut and any of the windows are open that the ecu has to be re-programmed by taking the glass right down to the stop and clicking it up gradually.

This doesn't seem to be much help to me as the window isn't going up or down? One thing i did notice is that the front passenger side window switch and all the others have a positive click up or down on the button. The drivers side window switch doesn't have the positive click? I have managed to put a bin liner over the gap in the window and taped it all up wehich although not ideal is but than now't. Does anyone have any ideas where i should look i was thinking about taking the switch housing out of the drivers side door and checking the wiring. Just seems funny that this happened when the battery went flat?

I was wondering if there are any other fuses i should check? I know from the past on the pug 405 there used to be a regulator inside the door that could play havoc when it went . I had to put a small block of wood in the bottom to hold the glass up until i could get it fixed.

Anyway i've waffled on for long enough. If anyone could help i would be very grateful as i don't really want to take it to the garage if this can be fixed easily myself.

Cheers
Marco

Hi marco, I've had this problem on my 2001 406, I came out the hospital, put the window down to put the car park card in, daft window stayed down.

I tried fiddling with the switch and it worked, next day it went again, stuck down, couldn't get the switch to do anything.

Anyway, I fixed it up temporary so my wife could use it for work until I got time to fix it.

Here is my temporary fix....

Take off the door panel, peel back the plastic, undo the bolts holding the window to the winding mechanism and slide up the window, jamm up the window with a wooden block or something, I think I put a small wedge in the window channel and cable tied it so it wouldnt come out...can't really remember.

Anyway, when I diagnosed the fault, I found that the switch was actually working in reverse, ie, it was going down when it was supposed to go up.

I got a switch block from the scrapper which has all the switches in one unit.

With the window disconnected from the winder mechanism, you can try switching the motor to make the window go up and down as per "the book" after you fit the new battery.
