Hey all
I've noticed a bit of a weird fault in my car (S Reg 2.1TD LX Estate)
The cig lighter/12V socket has recently packed up, which is a pain in the arse as i cant charge anything whilst on the move. I've also fitted a new kenwood stereo which doesnt seem to have any residual power going to it (when i shut off the ignition it loses all settings and radio presets).
Linked?
didnt know if there was some sort of seperate background electrical system these may both run off that i've popped. All fuses seem to be fine in the engine bay compartment.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Tim

I wouldn't think these things are linked unless you've got a butchered fusebox (not unheard of). The radio sounds like it's wired up wrong, not using the low-power permanent live and just using the ignition-switched one. To test this out, move the fuse (number 1 from memory - but check your handbook) to the alternate position - you'll see there's 3 slots for that and I think fuse 10. The stereo should now stay on, but don't keep it like this as it'll drain your battery - look at fixing the wiring on the stereo
The lighter socket's a weak point on these cars and has been known to break due to crappy construction. If you've got a multimeter, take it out and check for an ignition-switched 12v on the plug with 2 wires (the one with 1 wire is for illumination). To get the socket out, stick your fingers in and rotate the chrome plated metal bit anti-clockwise then pull it up. Replacements aren't too expensive from dealers, but phone up and get them to order one in, as they'll likely not have one in stock.
Of course, if you don't have a 12v supply on the connector, don't bother with a new socket and post back here.

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Just swap the red and yellow wire round on the stereo wiring loom that will keep the settings for your radio same happened with mine..
