Last year I got a 1996 D8.
It has a keypad type mobilser
One key is fully functional, remote central locling, dead locking etc.
The second key was not working. I changed the batteries, the little light comes on when you press the button but nothing happens. It will start the engine ok.

Two problems.
1.Neither of the keys turns the door lock by hand. i.e. If the car is locked, you can insert the key but it just turns round without engaging anything. Boot and glove box operate as normal. I am guessing that the locks have been disengaged for some reason. Has anyone come across this in the past, and how easy to fix?

2. How do I fix the second key so that it does the remote locking?

Spinning locks is a common quirk, it's an anti theft feature (if you use the wrong key it;ll spin) that works so effectively that it even keeps the car's rightful owner out :roll: because the lock mechanism gets a bit sticky and doesn't recognise even the right key. Doesn't nescessarily mean anything's broken. Squirt some wd40 in there then stick the key in and jiggle it about a bit.

Key programming: I've heard a couple of different versions...

1, Put key in ignition turn to red lights come on,
2, Push the primary button (big button) then within 10 seconds push the secondary button (little button)
3, turn off ignitition.

or

1, Put key in ignition,
2, Press and hold big button while switching ignition on, then keep it held for 10 sec.
3, release button.
4, switch off ignition.

The local stealership told me that if the battery voltage gets too low, the key forgets its programming. Now, various, methods for a DIY fix , including those outlined above, have been bandied about but I've never gotten any to work. I was also told by Pug that it'd cost me 40 squids for them to reprogram my key but that it was cash up front with no guarantees. Since I'm too skint to gamble with that kind of money, I'm still doing it the old fashioned way (ie spinning the key in the lock until it engages ^^).

mine used to work with the button, but the lock would spin, during this phase the keypad immob would not work, had to hold the button on the key while starting.

then, without warning

keypad lights up, remote locking stops working, and the real mystery? key starts working ok in the door.

seems to me as if the french have used strange alien technology for there security systems, which is unreliable, but has 5 backup systems so you can always get it going one way or another.

Both of my locks on my 406 use to spin continually, it wasn't until I got a can of WD40 and Servisol and proceeded to key f*ck my lock to death it eventually sprung in to life!

I never did solve the mystery of why my central locking through the fob didn't work though! Oh well, thats a job for another day, month, year, decade!
