Rear lights wiring

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Rear lights wiring

Post by foxChris »

Hi, this is my first post and I'm already stuck. I have a v6 coupe which I think is a d8. I'm trying to put in some custom rear lights but now I've taken then off realise that there is a connector with a plug rather than wires to each individual bulb. Can anyone tell me what the wires on each plug do so I can cut the plug off and re-wire. I've tried searching but not come up with anything. Cheers :-)

They don't do one for the coupe so does anyone know if the light wiring is the same as the saloon. Can anyone with a haynes book tell me what the wires do as I was hoping to avoid spending money just to find out what the wires do. Cheers

I'm not sure there was a Haynes for the coupe, but if you've got a multimeter then test each circuit out & mark it; obviously the earths don't matter. Just need a stick or an assistant for the brake lights!

Most people's first posts here are generally 'cos they're stuck and looking for answers :cheesy:

Every car I've had since the 70's is the same, you been away? :supafrisk:

There isn't a Haynes either for the couple or the V6 (double-stymied) but the wiring would be the same. I'm with Teamy though, see where the feeds go. Alternatively trace the tracks through the unit.

My car is a 1998 model. I've worked on many cars before but this is my first pug. The cars I've had previously all had wires going to each individual bulb with a connector. That means all you had to do was find positive and negative and re-wire. This is the first car I've come across with a light unit sharing a common ground and the bulbs set on circuit tracks rather than individual plugs/connectors. Hope that made sense!

'98 means it is a D8.

The light wiring should be the same across the saloon and coupe. Chances are the connectors will probably even be the same...
