406 Estate Rear Wiper Stopped Working After...

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 Estate Rear Wiper Stopped Working After...

Post by BruceT »

I fitted a new stalk with auto front wipers and rear wipe as per the old stalk but this one has the trip button.

It scrolls through the options on the display but with no readings due to the trip computer not been enabled in the BSI (Booked into Pug maindealers on Friday next, although the lady I spoke to didnt have a clue what I was asking lol)

Anyway, since then the rear wiper wont sweep the rear window properly.

It kinda moves very slowly... and if you move it with your hand with some force it will do a few sweeps relunctantly.

Ive taken the motor apart and cleaned all the old stuff and re-lubed it all up but its still not workin correctly...

Now, the motor was rather hot to touch... so im assuming...

1) The new stalk is not compatible with my rear wiper motor/assembly
2) Coincidence that the motor has gone week since fitting the new stalk?

Anyone heard of this before?

The stalk I got was this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0462890695

Now it says "Hatchback" but the 406 never came in Hatchback form... so maybe thats why? I doubt it though as the stalk is only a switch...?

Feedback?

try pulling the arm away from the window[so the wiper isnt touching the window] then opeate the wiper
if it works okay i would say the motor has had it as it hasnt got enough power to overcome the resitance of the wiper on the glass

Is it big jobs just to try the old switch? Hold on, I'm looking at both service boxes, there's no mention of buttons, there's just with or without rain sensor (I though all 406s had that :? ). Different numbers tho, 6239 61/A7 for 406 (D8&9), 6239 H5/H6 for ksara. I'm not really sure what to make of that :(

I popped the old stalk in, put the rear wiper on - nothing.

Weird.

Squirted some WD40 in the connectiors of the loom and the "new" stalk.

Fitted back in... Rear wiper works...

Is that only French cars is like? lol :)

Cheers for the help guys.

Most modern cars have masses of temperamental electronics, the frogs have a bad rep for it but they're not alone. Hey, shake your computer for a couple of hours, see how it likes it :cheesy: Mate of mine's uncle bought a new bimmer a while back, when its computer went haywire he found it's not covered under the warranty here...

Btw how do you find the seats in your Berlingo?

When i bought it at 77,000 miles they had sank a bit - Turned out to be the foam degrading. Put up with it for a year or so trying various temporary fixes, but got fed up a week ago and put a piece of 2"x1" - for you 50mm x 25 mm bar under the rear of the seat runners and all is well - so far.....

The main reason that I bought the vehicle is that I am 6'1" and have a knackered back. I have a real problem sitting upright in a car and this was one of the few that I could and have room to spare.

I know that he seats aren't the best in the world and I haven't driven any distance since my "modification" - bur there is always (if you'll forgive the pun) room for improvementt

P.S.

Many other cars might well have electrickery problems as well, but apart from one Honda all the cars I've owned in the past few years have been French - for one good reason - they're comfortable !!! That's my personal experience

It was a '99 Civic VTi - Went like stink and very challenging torque steer. But it was only a Rover 400 with different badges when all's said & done.

I am more than happy with the Kermitmobiles and accept their little foibles in the electrickery department. If the Blingo dies then I would seriously look for a good Xantia HDi estate the best all rounder I think I've had.

Thanks for that, I was considering one as a possible trade for the D8, in a kind of "use that to carry the dogs and other crap, trade D9 for coop" pipe dream. I did read about the seats tho, and I've been having a long-standing arguement with my buddy here (who also wants one) about them as he hears they're fine. :?

No, they're not the best. Virtually no lumber support. I did think about swapping seats to better spec ones from a 406 but it was all too much trouble - hence the piece of bar. It's a bit of a shame because it does everything else well, carrying people, dogs, crap to the tip, sand, cement, timber etc etc apart from fuel consumption on the motorway but hey ho can't have it all
