programe key fob

hello i have a 406 estate 2.0 diesel on an 03 plate, ive only had it about 2 months, the one thing im trying to fix is the key fob the car locks and unlocks using the key and starts fine, im getting fed up with having to put the key in the lock all the time,i want it to lock and unlock using the fob, ive changed the battery but no luck =, any idea

We're talking about the remote locking function, yes?

Mine is shot, too. When I spoke to the dealer they said that a prolonged low voltage (i.e. from a dying battery) causes the key to 'forget' its programming. They wanted 40 quid up front to attempt a reprogram. Operative word being 'attempt'.

Having said that, some folks have managed to reprogram the key themselves. Have a search and there's a huge thread on the subject.

Taken from my 2003 handbook.
"Programming the remote control:-
Switch off the ignition,
Switch the ignition on again,
Press button A immediately(button A is the locking button)
Switch off the ignition & remove the remote control key from the ignition lock.The remote control is now working again."

On my 2003 406HDi Estate, any disconnection of the battery results in the keyfob not working. I have tried every procedure listed in the manual and on the internet to "re-programme" it and also various local garages have said they could do it "no problem" and then failed. Only a main dealer seems to be able to do it (at a cost of about £40). I know the re-programming procedures work on some 406's, so they are worth trying before you throw the towel in.
