d8 LX -> GLX differences? (more questions added!)

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

d8 LX -> GLX differences? (more questions added!)

Post by StevieboyTD »

I've just got my mits on a set of door cards from a glx model, which has got the rear window controls.

I already have the motors and looms to fit to the rear doors, so does the standard LX front door loom have the rear door window wiring? IE can i actually wire up all the switches and control the rear windows (once i've fitted them!)

Also, did the GLX have heated mirrors? Or was that on the exec models?

Just moved house, so i've been offline for a while and my pride and joy has been reduced to a tip run wagon :( so i've got some nice toys to add once all the crap has been cleared away (managed to get the fog light stalk out of the GLX too, means my fogs can do more than just look nice now! :D

Cheers.

I would of thought so, that the loom to fit electric windows to the rear would be in there tbh. And yes i think the GLX was fitted with Heated Mirrors, if it corrects me it was from the GLX upwards that had them. I'm sure someone on here would be able to confirm.

None of the wiring is there.
I did this conversion on my now defunct LX a couple of years ago, you'll need to run several feeds into the drivers door (which is not socketed; you'll have to drill through the gland where the wires leave the car; then you can poke them through)
I fitted electric wing mirrors while I was at it; you'll need to grab a couple of sockets for the mirror plugs. I think all the electric mirrors are heated, you have to run the switched feed to the rear demister button loom.
A right pain of a job but it was definitely worth it!

bugger :(

I've already got the electric mirrors, but they don't seem to be heated (or if they are, they take bloody forever to clear!)

I've got the run of the car before if gets scrapped, so i might run down and rip out the door loom, then work out how far i need to go into the car to chop stuff out. Why the hell didn't they socket the front doors!

I tried to have a nose at things in the drivers footwell while i was taking the doorcards and switches out but the plastics there beat me, good grief that stuff doesn't want to come out!

FWIW,
Pug changed the spec on the LX around about late R reg.
I owned both early and late 1.9td and the later model had.
Aircon....not digital but lost the sunroof and extra interior lighting
ABS
Outside temp guage which ran off...
Heated adjustable electric door mirrors body coloured
Rear headrests
Gas struts on the bonnett
Glx style diagonal cloth on the seats (nowhere near as good spec as the first models).

They looked identical cars from the outside!

As far as the GLX spec went, Later models had alloys instead of wheel trims
And all GLX's had 4 electric windows and climate style digital aircon and front fogs I think.

Got all those toys on mine!, Here's hoping i've got the door wiring too then!

Tempted to try and get the clever looking aircon controller out too, but i really doubt that would fit the LX loom without some other bits too.

Right, next lot of differences to check!

Put the cluster from a GLX petrol in, all the normal stuff works (glow plug, engine, stop, brakes, etc) but now i have the oil gauge to the left aswell.

Is this gauge a combo level/temp unit, or is it just a level gauge? (wifes 206 was a combo, mates 406 d9 is just a temp)

From memory the level gauge is in the sump in the hole above the drain hole. Is there an oil temp sensor? (if it's a temp gauge that is!)

Also, can i hybrid the speedo/rev counter gauges into the newer conslole, my xud doesn't rev to 8k and i'm pretty sure it won't do 130mph either! (but i'm an awkard bugger and want to keep the central fuel gauge :D)

Fitted my fogs today, piece of cake to get them in, just take the lamp holder off the back and they both went in under 30 minutes. Is it me or are they a bit loose with them only having a bracket on the bottom?

Last question! (honest!) The relay to run the front fogs (the black oblong one), what does the black oblong relay next to it do?

Cheers :)

The fogs are supposed to have a hooked spring which goes over the top and holds them in pace. I never bothered hooking mine on cos they're a pain, so the right one is wobbly but in place and the left one isn't quite sitting in its socket correctly. Get the springs on and you'll be fine, a job which is much easier wit hthe bumper off...

Hmm, my lights didn't have any springs on them and i didn't see any inside the bumper when i was removing the blanks, looks like it'll be a cable tie job then :D

From experience, it kicks the air con on and the rear window defroster.

Anybody know about the oil gauge then? Is it a level/temp gauge or just a level gauge?

Where are the sensors on the engine?

(quite gutted really, was only yesterday i realised i'd missed out on a set of disc rear hubs to put on mine too :()

Yes me!! :cheesy: Just got a R reg 1997 Est 2.1TD.
There are 2 different types of oil gauge.1 is an "Engine oil gauge",with OFF,MIN & MAXmarkings & an orange line.
The other is a"Engine oil & temperature gauge",marked from cold to 140,with a red & white line on the gauge. :)

When i turn mine on, i get a red/yellow bar at the bottom and the needle goes to full deflection, then back to the needle stop. After 5 seconds the light behind the red/yellow part goes out.

No 140, no max. Odd :(

Do you know where the sensors are on your model?
