Disconnecting Battery on 406 HDI

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Disconnecting Battery on 406 HDI

Post by RossMac »

Hello There,

I am hoping someone can answer this question, i have a 406 2.0L HDI (53 plate)
the battery terminals are a bit corroded and i would like to disconnect the battery to clean them up and put some
elecrical contact lube on them.

My fear is that I've only had this car a few months and I'm unsure if disconnecting the battery
will cause any problems (eg) radio code, built in sat nav, engine imobiliser, ECU
I dont want to disconnect and end up with a bill from peugeot to get the car going again.
Obviously i know that i could get a second battery and connect leads on to the cables prior to disconnecting to maintain the power supply to
the car.
But would like to be safe in the knowledge that i can disconnect my battery if and when required without having to do this.

Thanks in advance

Ross

Hi,
It's always best to keep the cars electrics energised by either connecting another battery or using one of those battery operated things that you plug into the fag lighter (personally I have found the fag lighter connectors unreliable).

If you have that flaky, white powder stuff on your battery leads, boil the kettle and pour the boiling water over the leads, this will disperse any corrosion.
When the leads are dry, smear vaseline all over the leads to protect them.

Take care not to scald yourself with the boiling water.

get yourself a code saver there bout £20 and saves a lot of hassle when connecting the battery back up ive never had any problems with them before i use them to keep the codes when doing any electrical work head work or engine electrical work but there again there only good when you got a cigarette lighter that works then you better hope you got the radio codes as for everything else that should be fine there shouldnt be a problem with them codes

My 1999 HDi used to be fine about having it's battery disconnected but I can't be sure on a 2003?

Best way is to frigg up another battery to the bare terminals of the cars leads whilst you disconnect it.

You have a D9 so you don't need to worry about a radio code. The only thing you'll lose is the one-touch window opening/closing, and that's a doddle to reset. Just be careful not to spark the battery terminal too much as you take it off and put it back on
