A series of electrica problems

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

A series of electrica problems

Post by ftaffy1 »

Hey Guys and Gals,

Hopefully someone can help shed some light on this. I am in Australia, Melbourne - so maybe a little bit far for most to pop round for a looksy.

I have a (just picked up a week ago) D9 406 coupe
07/1999 build, with 2000 reg
With the old engine and a manual gearbox. - Making it a D8.5 i guess.

The brake lights stopped working when i went in to the car road worthied - they were working before that.
Anyway got told it was the switch, so i pulled the switch and its working, there is not power getting to it. So went into the fuses, F11 and F12 are not getting any power to them but the rest on the row are. So thought it might be the BSI, so did a reset. No change.

Took the car out and then found i have no wipers - at all
Then got home and found i also have no central locking, remote or otherwise
Then found i have no warnings for lights on, door open or keys in door open etc.

So i checked the fuses for the wipers and locking - both have power.

It was suggested that my BSI might stuffed and i was offered AU$250 to replace it with a wrecker one. But this guy already has given me a $3K repair list and i am not keen to sending him everything. So it will be going to another autoelectrican next week but in the mean time any suggestions?
Relays? Common wire points?

Hi there, welcome aboard :cheesy: You might also be interested in joining the coupe club (http://www.peugeot406coupe.com - maybe you did already, I didn't look yet).

I guess it could be the ignition switch (try jiggling key) and this might be of interest to you - viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4230&p=39954&hilit= ... pet#p39954 Hmm, I guess it rains there too... I don't think the BSI has much to do with the brake lights (I could be wrong here...)

Other than that, it's out with the forked stick time :(

Hello & welcome 8)

As steve says, a BSI problem is unlikely - ignition switch definetly possible. I don't have a diagram for your car, but mine suggests MF12 in the engine fusebox could be the problem. If not, I would try carefully bypassing the ignition switch to prove a point.

Welcome in mate! :)
Ignition switch is a possibility with so many circuits non functional, either that or one of the multi connectors in the drivers footwell are corroded. Are all the fuses under the bonnet ok?

My money's on the ignition switch too. The only thing I don't understand is the lack of non-remote central locking. Remote is disabled with a key in the barrel, but at least on D8s it still works turning a key in the door (I sometimes used the spare key to lock the car while scraping ice with the engine running to clear the inside of the windscreen)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I little late i know but thought id chick this into the pot. I found that my electrics went bonkers last year.... wipers not working, light not working. Lights going on and off in the dark...... wipers would go and not turn off. Spent ages working it out but turned out to be the vent in the boot.....mine is a d9..... right side of boot behind panel had become loose and the seal wasnt tight thus letting in water which must have been getting into the electrcial system via the lights.

Glad it was sorted but rened my car useless for a week or so.
