Aussie 406 - A/C Evaporator

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Aussie 406 - A/C Evaporator

Post by RumPug »

Hi All, Great forum.

Have owned my 2001 D9 406 HDi Estate here in Australia for just over 12 months and other pugs for years.

The AirCon Evaporator in the 406 Cabin has sprung a leak! Everyone I have spoken to so far has said.. never had a problem with one of these before. Well, it is rather warm at present.... would like to get this fixed.
I have removed the Evaporator and confirmed it is leaking and this is now have out of the vehicle. (Big job to remove with all the dash out etc to get to it. Chaps, Not a job for the faint hearted!) The non-genuine part that was supplied does not fit we think it must be for a D8?, slightly different size and connection points. They don't have any other versions. ! So far I have not yet found a supplier in Australia with one to suit?? There are thousands of these cars here in Australia!!

The Genuine part is expensive, suffice to say.

So, long shot, can anyone put me onto a supplier that will sell one in UK, non genuine or equivalent? The original is a Valeo, with part... numbers etc on the TX valve, on the unit I have I can supply.
I Can supply photos of the full removal process to date. also.
Has anyone replaced one of these before?
What costs in the UK? :?:

Regards

Kurt

A great example of how to alienate yourself on a UK-based forum in one easy step  We're going through a bit of a cold spell round here at the moment, it's been a few weeks since the temperature round here was above zero

Anyhoo, AC evap. Can't say I've ever heard of one going either, but your best bet would be to phone eurocarparts.com and gsfcarparts.com and see if they have them, or know where you could get one from. Maybe ring a few branches as staff competence varies wildly... An alternative would be to hit ebay.co.uk and look for people breaking 406s but they my be reluctant to send overseas

Hi there Kurt, yes please to the pics! :cheesy: I don't even think we have something like that on here so that will probably be very useful. What's with the other Pugs?

I dunno, we usually hear 406s are as rare as an honest politician down there, and you reckon there are thousands :?

I've had a look on GSF and Eurocarparts but it doesn't look like they sell them. So I had a Google

Aaron - Won't deliver outside the UK (something could be arranged though). They have diagrams which might help you find what you have there.

AirconAuto - only deliver to Europe (gits), again I'm sure if you ask nicely...

Google Products Search - 266 results

Very rare for the evaporator to go. I've heard about it on older cars where no Pollen Filter was fitted - then all the crud and wet leaves rot the aluminium tubing.

Good luck with the quest!

Thanks Chaps,

mjb Sorry to hear about the weather over there. Sounds like good stuff for polar bears. :(. Its still fine here though. currently 10:00pm and still +26deg C. was a hot day actually... banter... Has also been Heat waves in southern Australia +41degC,..
I hope you gents get a reprieve from the cold snap soon, sending warmth your way.

Well the 406 parts search for the cabin AirCon Evaporator is on. I found some listings on autogateway.co.uk. These are a little strange though. The Aussie Peugeot part number I am chasing is 6450.FA - this is sold as the evaporator housing and evaporator. RHD, I Don't need the housing, just the internal evaporator, but sold as a set.
I suspect that the evaporator core should all be the same... If it was my thinking, thats what I would do to use common parts, but you never know.
I will probably need to find exact measurements / photos from suppliers to properly compare with overseas models.
The gateway site lists a non genuine equivalent to a LHD????? part number 6450.JT or superceeded 6444.C8. Which I understand is for LHD??? Though UK was RHD like here?. will look further into this.

From the information gathered to date, I think that earlier model D8's have a slightly different evaporator 330mm wide vs. D9's around 300mm wide. I suspect will be all similar between D9's..
Yet to confirm. If anyone else has one to measure, let me know.

Steve thanks steve for the quick lookup. I found that if I do a search from google.co.uk instead of google.com.au you get completely different results... no wonder not finding much.

I read this somewhere last week but from my recollection (not definitive)...Peugeot is currently 12th most popular new car manufacturer sold, (So not that big but still about) Some stats also that there are over 70,000 Peugeots registered. (don't know how many 406 within this yet.).

As an interesting history, The car I have was used on dirt roads quite a bit, there is no dust ingress through the cabin filter, as this has been serviced over time, but there appears enough fibre and dust that I am guessing has entered the evaporator via using the Reciculate function. Note there is no filter for internal cabin air entering. I have heard from a mechanic that he has found a $50 note in someones evaporator before, came out of the glove box... Lucky find for him hey.

So, you can see my evaporator, with dust and old leak on one side. maybe has frozen up and got wet, corroded.
Some other symptons that I had 12 mths earlier was lots of water leaking out onto the carpet through the little breather hole on the fan. This could be a telltale to anyone else that the evaporator is getting clogged, or freezing.

I took over 100 photos on the dismantle, (so i can get it all back together)...
here is one or two. - not sure what size this site can handle.

Owned a few pugs over time. :cheesy:

Keep Pugging.

To diverge for a minute. Lots of 406s over here (Oz). Sold from mid 1990's through to 2004, D8's and 9's. Diesels, 4 & 6 cylinder petrol. Problem is more that the wrecker (sorry Breaker) market is thin (we are all chasing the same bits mostly and expensive ("they are French mate"!)

Also, pugs in Oz dont always appreciate our slightly warmer conditions. :cheesy:

I had another look on Pug's own parts catalougue Service Box:
6450FA - 406 NEW AIR CONDITIONING AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE WITH EVAPORATOR AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
6450JT - 406 NEW AIR CONDITIONING AND LEFT HAND DRIVE WITH EVAPORATOR AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
6444C8 - doesn't exist :?

What sort of difference there is between LHD and RHD is anyone's guess. Oops, looks like that Aaron site's gone, that's a shame as they had measurements on there :frown:

I'm not sure about the water coming out of the hole in the fan (que?), maybe the air con drain's blocked (remove centre console right hand side panel and air vent tube)

I thought the only difference was which side the fan's mounted, Haynes says to get to the matrix on RHDs you take the glovebox out, to get to it on LHDs you take the steering column off :?
