Ignition Barrel replacement

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Ignition Barrel replacement

Post by Captain Jack »

Hi,

Today after work, I have almost been unable to turn the ignition on due to a stuck ignition barrel. Kept wiggling the key for 5 mins before it finally turned (with a little force). So now, I am on the lookout for a replacement ignition barrel and key.

I guess, it's relatively simple to replace the barrel itself, replace the key blade in my key (therefore, keeping electronics the same) and away I go?

Are D8/D9/Petrol/Diesel/HDI/HPI ignition barrels the same and compatible with my 2002 HDI steering column?

I've never managed to extract a blade from a key. However you can switch the circuit board and the little transceiver around...

Hi CJ , replacing the barrel is straight forward , when you have removed the steering
column shroud just check the plugs o the new one are the same as the old one before
you remove it , when i did mine i think i came across one with different plugs. A good
thing to do is remove the wiper stalk (2 torx screws 1 plug ) this lets you see the barrel
more easily , the plastic transponder around the barrel just clips off dont forget the
screw on top of the barrel and i think you have to put your key in to release the barrel.
The blade does come out of the fob , clamp blade with pliars , hold fob with other hand
and while pulling gently wiggle , its hard but it will come , its a push fit into a kind of rubber
housing
.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron

Hi Puggy,

It's a COM2000 stalk, so can't easily remove the wiper stalk...

So the blade just comes out? I thought I'd have to open up the key (like I would to chage the battery) in order to change the blade?

dam im pissed i missed your thread, could of been helpful for you!

I found it was the electrical bit behind the barrell that was the problem, i changed this and all the wires and the problem was fixed, handy for me as i didnt have to change the key

i actually found the haynes book was helpful in this for a change, as well as testing my theory in the scrap yard
