you have to place aftermarket 6x9s on top of the shelf, but the thing is the hole thats allready in the shelf is just a bit to big to bolt your new speaker to the shelf, you will see what i mean when you remove your shelf.

remove the shelf thats the best way to do it, ive done it the same way as modified,
in theory you trap the shelf between the speaker and the MDF bolting your speaker to the MDF,

you can buy the spacer off ebay, but i got 2 peices of MDF from local woodyard and cut the holes myself with my jigsaw,
cost me £1.20 for the wood and about 1 hour to fully do the job,

i need to check my wires under the shelf later, so im gonna be removing my shelf,

i will post pics how its done if that helps ... its very easy

The rear speakers in the estate are actually smaller than the front. Didn't measure them, but I'm guessing at about 4ins. They are located halfway up the rear pillars in the boot.

I'm with you on that. When I get into it I was thinking of replacing the ones in the pillars with aftermarket speakers, getting a small sub box (something that'll fit behind the extra rear seats when they're up) & fitting some 6x9s in the parcel shelf (run off the amp that'll be needed for the sub box.

If I ever get the time & spare funds...

if your getting a sub theres no need to fit 6x9s and put bigger speakers in the rear pillars,

standard speakers are fine if you add a sub (not to loud tho with the standards)
