Bad :(

Post by johnny406 »

Hey had a problem today, driving down the road. My mate turns the stereo upto full briefly it's a Panasonic CQ-C7703 (70wx4) and the bloody car dies

Pull over at the side of a country lane, and try starting it....

Turns, but nothing :(

Oh dear, I think to myself.

Look down, hang on a full tank of petrol? and the Oil Guage constantly on, something not right here.

Even the Mileage and Trip computer wasn't showing.

Disconnects battery, reconnects to no avail.

Checks fuse in engine bay fine.

Check fuses in passenger cabin ahah it was either 26 or 28 that had blown the radio, trip computer one.

Then my engine wouldn't start, strange.

Yanked the radio out and place it on the passenger seat, swapped a fuse over not sure with one.

Bingo starts everything back to normal minus sound :(

Any idea, I realise this is 10amp and my radio has a 20amp or so fuse in the back.

Can I uprate it?

Thanks.

I wouldn't uprate the fuse on a circuit that's been designed for a lower rating, you'll be playing with fire literally!

Oh well, I'm gonna sell it, was only £30 should get at least double that it's a good headunit,
I'll get a Pioneer DEH-110E to replace it.
10 Amp fuse in the back (y) good sign.
Panasonic has too many wires and an external convertor for the 70w digital amp.
The Pioneer will be a cleaner install, I'll do it tommorow.
Anyone know why fuse 25 blew, haven't check the other 2 radio ones F16 and f16a maybe they went too I'll check tommorow.
But any idea why the bloody engine died, power steering everything gone.
Disconcerning at 60mph, limited braking into a country hedge.

If fuse 25 is 10A, and your stero can draw 20A, then that should explain why it went pop. In order to keep your stereo, all you need to do is to run a fused wire directly from the battery to the stereo, the same as running a power wire for an amp. Stick a 20A fuse in at the front and you should have no more problems.

Your power steering would go when you engine died as it's run frm the engine, so no engine, no power steering, power brakes, any electrics, etc. It sounds as if you drew too much current and possibly spiked something, hence everything dying. Allowing it to reset by disconnecting the battery and removing the problem seemed to cure it. Worst case scenario is that there are some wires crossed or melted within the headunit now hence why the car wouldn't restart with headunit still attached.

if memory serves me the Panasonic unit you have needs to be hard wired like the top end alpines
this means that you basically don't connect the permanent live to the car's audio wiring instead you hard wire it (through a fuse) to the battery
for it to pull at max 70wx4 is way to much for the car wiring and this is why when the volume went up the car went pop
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!!!!
