Rattle, rattle, rattle....

Post by Captain Jack »

Hi,

Since I replaced the door cards yesterday on the front doors, the driver's side seems to rattle quite a bit if I turn the volume up a bit. It's definitely the door card as if I push it really hard to the door, it kind of stops. On the old card, I put some "soft tape" around the edges of the card, so they are not in direct contact with the door, therefore damping the sound. So this kind of sorted it.

I will probably do that on this one too, but is there anything else I can do to damp the rattle a bit? It was suggested I put some dynamat on the card itself, but not sure on whether it will affect the sound quality. Was also suggested to put some foam between the card and the door, but again, that will probably affect the sound. The door itself is plastered in dynamat, so can't put any more on it!

Any suggestions?

I'll try it tomorrow without it, but I am pretty sure the whole card is vibrating quite madly

A hot glue gun and a few boxes of glue sticks will solve this
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Welp, I didn't try it without the grill, but I did put my hand on it and the rattling subsided quite considerably. So It's definitely something to do with the grill area.

So my plan of action for next week is (when I have a week off):

1) Put some soft lining around the whole of the door card so that there's no bare metal to card contact.
2) Put the same lining around the the speaker grills.
3) Same lining on the outline of the speakers themselves, so that there's no direct plastic to plastic contact
4) Line the inside of the door cards with dynamat type thing
5) Maybe put some foam inside the door cards (not sure about this one)

I also have some bloody annoying rattle inside the drivers door that I have without the door card or the music on, so I think it's some wires rattling in there. So that means taking the existing dynamat off and fixing everything down.

Not too sure about the glue gun as once if hardens it'll break the bond and start ratting again.... :?

Thoughts?

While you in there make some MDF baffles up for the speakers. It'll be more stable than the plastic stuff in there already

OK, well I didn't do about half the things I said I would but I did line the whole thing with draught excluder strip thing. I also got some 6mm screws as 5mm was already "threaded" in the door due to so many times taking it in and out. It is much much better now but at full blast there's still some rattling coming from what I believe are switches. But the bass has to be pretty loud indeed for that to happen.

So all in all, I am generally happy with my car at the moment. Soon to hit 140k :cheesy:

Definitely not the wires as they are wrapped up pretty well!

I did drive around without the door cards on.. and obviously without the music and there's still some annoying rattle coming from either inside the door or under the dash somewhere. Couldn't locate it, though :(

Thanks for the offer on the covers - I sent you PM :D
