DVD player and screens

Post by biglamb »

hi all, Is this the place to tell all about your i.c.e mods?? hope so, if not im sorry.

I have a 406 estate executive, so im pretty speced up in there. But here is a good idea. I have just unstalled two 7" screens in my head rests and a dvd player. So the kids stop bugging me. I bought a pair or universal cream leather head rests with the screens pre installed. Perfect colour match. and as i was missing a rear rest. i now have the old adjustable fronts in the back. result.!! I had heard that the built in sat nav on these things aint too good, and as i have no disk for mine anyway, and i own a tom tom. I pulled out the siemens unit and installed my din sized dvd there. it came with a remote control and an infa red sencor. So i mounted that next to the sun roof switch area. It fits in, looks neet and pics up the remote anywere in the car. I then bought a pair of infa red wirless headphones, (can styley) sweet! They came with a larger infared sencor witch has been located dead centre behind the rear interior light on the head lining. Dosent look too bad. looks like it belongs. Not a wire in sight. So silent kids!!! exellent. But the best thing is the price. Head rests £50 (ebay), new dvd player £17 (ebay), head phones £30 from some trade audio place. Total =£97 but i got £61 for my siemens unit on the bay and i dont need to buy a rear head rest now either. The whole job took me about 4 hours to do with a bit of help in places, but all the wire have been run with the origional pug looms. i hate messy wire. If any one is intrested il post some pics, and if anyone else is thinking of this diy job ill happily give tips, as there were a few hidden pit falls. Thanks for reading. please post some comments.

1, Register with http://www.photobucket.com.
2, Upload the pics there
3, In your photobucket "my album" there'll be four lines of code under each picture, click the bottom one, labelled "IMG code", clicking once automatically copies the link to your clipboard.
4, Open 406oc in another tab and reply to the thread, then just paste the link in where you'd normally type.
5, back to photobucket, click the last line under the next photo, back to 406oc, paste, back to photobucket.......
6, Job done 8)

Right, thanks for that DaiRees.

This one is of the DVD player itself, living ith the old house of the sat nav. It is a 12v din sized dvd player, it just pushed straight in and then mounted with some litte screws. The wiring was simple enough, except there is no ignition live in the boot. So i had to run one from the front.

These three are or the screens. they are after market universal 7" lcd flat screens. They came pre mounted in the cream leather headrests you see there. A very good colour match i think. The two stalk that slot into the seat are very adjustable, and went into the rather narrow holes. They also came with sleaves to help with the wider seat holes. The wire for the screen is located down one of the stalks. So they are still fully adjustable like before, with no visible wires.

This is the infa-red reciever for the remote controle for the DVD player. It can pick up the remote from anywhere in the car. I mounted it just at the front neer the light and sunroof control area. It fits in here best it could, near the other infa-red stuff. The wire is run under the headlining, so again, No visible wires. It does look neater and smaller that the pic shows. I think there is a shadow on the pic.

This is the infa-red reciever for the two headphones. The reciever is two channel. so if i decide to mount another DVD player i can have one pair per DVD player. Also one screen each. This reciever is a bit bulkier than the other, but mounted behine the light n the back, just up from the roof lining raise, you can hardly even see it from the front of the car. This photo was taken from the boot. The reciever picks the headphones up from anywhere in the car too.

So there it is. my fool proof kiddie quieting system. It does shut em up too.
hope you all like it, and i will answer any technical questions if i can, if you want.

My god, that looks so good, and so cheap too! I'll be emailing a link for my bro for something to keep my nephew quiet (apart from putting him on the bonnet...) The pics probably don't show the colours up so well but if they're anywhere close you'd never notice the headrests are just a touch darker unless you were looking for it.

and you've got a sunroof :(

I have a sunroof, Its an executive ting.

I have edited the pics to make them a bit smaller. they were wayyy toooo big. I think they are a tiny tadd shade darker. but they are also a bit grubby, from the previous car. I need to clean them but i was just too exited about putting them in.

option ay??? hmmm i didnt know that. but i like it. But if it makes ya feel better i dont have the headlight washers. as the previous owner drove into a post and busted the front bumper. then only replaced it with a standard one. DOH! but i dont blame him. i priced up the motor/pumps for the two sides and the are about £160 for me to buy them and butcher them into this bumper.

On D8s at least, you don't get headlight washers on the estate as far as I can tell, because there's only room for 2 pumps and the 2nd one is used for the rear screen. My old exec estate had the nozzles in the bumper, but the piping wasn't connected because there wasn't anywhere for it to attach to...
