Destruction Derbys

Post by FarmerPug »

Has anyone ever been to one of these events, basically cars are put in a ring and the winner is the last one standing. But whats the best car to use, every time i go there is always the odd brick volvo estate but suprisingly they never do win, its usually something small and agile.

Yeah I used to go to these when I was a cub, great fun to watch. My dad used to race stock cars when he was a youth, first thing that got him into Peugeots. He used to race a 304. If I can find a pic of it in its racing livery I'll post it up on here.

nutts corners still a good place for the stock car racing, a 304, the last time i seen one of them was actually in a field full of really old peugeots where 04 was the newest ones i counted about 7 504 pickups, and perhaps 1 505 pickup but the vast majority was 04s

That sounds like a great field! I've never actually been to Nutts Corner to watch the racing. I always went to Aghadowey or Ballymena Showgrounds.

yup theres one at nutts corner, your probably closer to it than me, from the road on a quiet day it looks like a very small ring, but when they are actually racing its more than big enough, you can see everything thats happening which a bigger track wouldnt allow you to do, its even better with the caravan destruction derby which demonstrates the solidity of caravans, and how easilly cars can tip over while towing a caravan.

Yeah I used to go and watch the banger racing, that always ended in a demo derby. They seem to use pretty much anything, I remember lots of mainstream family cars, cavaliers etc, the old granadas were pretty unstoppable.

I used to race bangers and bombers(armoured bangers)racing mk3 or mk4 cortina's,mk1 or 2 granada's and even a couple of austin maxi's,landcrab 1800's and 2200's as well
done a few DD's but was too much of a hothead to even think about finishing a race, its as much about luck as it is build quality or type of car. an old mate used to race an old austin 1100 againt a 3.8 jag and altough he used to bounce off the jag he gave as good as he got.

i wouldnt mind giving it a go, its a good way to end the life of an mot failure, you go to one smash it up whatever happens you get bruised and have a good time, if you loose you still have a car thats worth scrap value, if win you win around £100 and still have a car for scrap, or even another go. i have access to a nissan bluebird diesel and i hear they were good in that sort of thing because they are quite tank like.
