I passed my test in 1972, used to get paid on a Thursday, fill up my Poxhall Viva & get change from £2.
(It was 33p a GALLON then)!

my dad said when he was my age he could run the car for £5 per week and he could also insure it, a ford cortina.

How expensive does petrol/diesel have to get before you have to do something about it?

I could move closer to work, within walking distance in fact.
At present it takes about 45 minutes in the car, and 3 hours on public transport.
10p per mile gives a round trip cost of £7 against £24 on public transport.
So on fuel the cost has to more than triple before it costs the same.
But the car is still more convenient: what about my time? My employer pimps me out at £100/hour!
And I'm only doing about 17k miles / year.
You just can't make fuel expensive enough.
So what about increasing car tax? Say about £1,000/year? That hits everyone uniformly.
What action would you take?

no more price rises. Let the ecoists drive their toyota purees, and their datsun fallen leaves, and geewizis, and dont annoy us who enjoy the actual driving bit of commuting. Thats what all these public transport promoters dont understand, i get enjoyment out of driving; i dont smoke or drink so just let me enjoy my car.
