Not only BMW drivers, But blatting down the motorway for hours then stopping and into meetings etc everyday is not good for turbos.

Re: Turbo Diesels
i think you should always let your engine run for a bit when you have a turbo.the only way a turbo gets lubricated is when the engine is running.the turbo spins at a fantastic rate[think its about 20000revs] so as you can imagine it gets hot,so if you switch the engine off straight away no oil to those bearings and sooner or later you will have a proplem.used to have a gadget on my old omega that let the engine run when you took the key out.dead clever it was as you couldnt rev it past tick over and you could set it up to 3 mins.

Re: Turbo Diesels
Ii my pug manual it recomends letting the engine idle after a hard run. Got to be a good idea to let the oil take the heat away.

Re: Turbo Diesels
I thought this was more relevant for higher speed turbos like used on petrol engines.
BMW get 170hp from their 2 litre diesel, which besides the extra stress has untested "innovative" features (swirl flaps), and in my experience their owners mercilessly push them hard. Its just asking for trouble.

Re: Turbo Diesels
Turbo timers are a good idea and would help the turbo , but i bet the insurance companies dont like (understand) them.

The BMW turbo diesels with swirl flaps are having big trouble with the swirl flaps breaking up and being sucked into the engines causing complete engine failures.
There is allegedly a big fuss going on about this right now.

if buying a used beemer wouldnt it be better to get a petrol for that lovely purr they make, the diesels as good as they are on paper sound like tractors.

Re: Turbo Diesels
The sad thing (for petrol heads) is the Diesels are producing more torque, a lot more, which equates to more grunt on the road. A neigh-bore of mine has a new 335d (3.0 twin-turbo d) with 286bhp and 520Nm torque at 1750rpm
he struggles to get the power down without traction control.
Sadly, I think petrol engines have almost had their day, apart from the tiny city cars with multi-air, 3 cylinders and all that.

A remapped 535d is faster 30-100 than an M5!Welly wrote:The sad thing (for petrol heads) is the Diesels are producing more torque, a lot more, which equates to more grunt on the road. Re: Turbo Diesels
the thing is though a fact is overlooked, the m5 diesel has a pair of turbos, the m5 petrol from what i understand just relies on the size of its engine. If you do the same to a petrol engine then it will be just as powerful. Actually look at an imprezza it just has a 2.5 petrol.
Petrol is definatley the only engine small fiats should have, a diesel panda and ive drove one is not right, it turned a fun nippy nice handling city car into a small tractor that felt very nose heavy and did better fuel economy so made you become boring because if anyone asked you about the car you would discuss fuel economy.
That transit still sounds a bit like a transit, ok the bmw does sound ok but you have to live with the chris bangle bodywork.
