Noob here, collect 406 tomorrow

Post by Coxy »

Never owned a Peugeot before and had intended to buy a cheap £500 small runaround, but somehow ended up buying a 406 V6 3.0!

Anyway I pick it up tomorrow. Just wondered is there anything I need to know? Any 'must do' mods or changes?

Cheers

i dont know much either about the v6 engine, other than its the one i want, and it sounds fantastic.
Its not a must do, but a strut brace at about £30 really does improve the handling immensley, probably more on a coupe.
Also if you find the interior a bit dull, its easy to paint the black parts a nice shade of grey which lightens it up.
And if the running costs are a bit high, you do have the option of an lpg kit (although probably around £2k)

Also i suppose its good to say check when the timing belt was done, and replace if necessary.
Welcome in by the way.

Cheers, well luckily timing belt was done recently. Car has a whole folder of service history and it's in fantastic condition.

If a strut brace will make any difference on the saloon then I will get one. As for the interior, I don't think needs brightening, has beige leather so it's not all dark.

Yes. Remove the air filter box, and to the rear of it, just inside the oval pipe connector, is an oval band of steel. Remove this before it gets sucked into the throttle body jamming it open.

Also, get the n/s/f wheelarch off and check the condition of the air intake hose. If it's collapsed or full of holes, just rip it off - you'll get most of the car's power back. Not as much as a good condition hose gives, but it does have the advantage of raising the intake away from puddles (which can drown 406s if deep!)

I've managed a very easy 707 miles to a tank in mine with 2 passengers, a full boot and the remaining 2/3 of the rear passenger area full of luggage... but I do average about 20mpg on my daily commute
