My fuel gauge has a poltergeist. One minute it's full, next it swings wildly to empty.

re: Those "psychics". I would say most (maybe not all, but certainly most) are shysters.

Feeding off the vulnerable. Confidence tricksters. Often they will glean as much info as possible beforehand
eg. "What do you want from this session? Who do you want to contact?" "My uncle Bob if possible. He always liked fishing with me"

Then in the reading:

"I am seeing your uncle bob. He is in heaven fishing, says he caught big one. Says he remembered when the both of you liked to fish" "Wow! You must be psychic!"

"I'm getting an older female through" "That must be my granny Smith" "Your granny Smith says hi and is looking over you etc." "Wow! That's wonderful! How did you know?"

Also, I saw one once in a TV programme that every time he went to the house for the reading, excused himself to use the loo and was nosying about for clues eg. photos.

The people getting the reading done do have good intentions and do go along with it as normal intelligent open minded people, but I do think that the majority are tricked by confidence tricksters / mentalists (see Derren Brown's "psychic" readings as an example).

They wont give you lottery numbers.

They'll make all sorts of claims - visions don't have numbers, blurry, against karma, quantum many-world theory etc.

The truth is you can't derive winning lottery numbers from vagueness and error guessing.

But how did Derren Brown do it on his live broadcast that time? Was it camera trickery?

I'm very skeptical of the whole "other side" thing, and ghosts, and the like.

I am not skeptical at all about the TV "psychics" as they're just plain liars that exploit people's loss. It's so easy to do, as well, by being vague, and using very general questions until you can hone in on a piece of information that your target can be persuaded to give up. And for that reason, they are reserved a very special place in hell, on the same level as the Televangelists, who are uber-rich from taking "donations for the poor and needy" from spiritually impressionable (or just plain gullible) people.

The Wifely Person is very keen on the concept of ghosts and reincarnation and psychics - but even she doesn't believe in the TV psychics. Doesn't stop her tuning in to the likes of "Most Haunted" from time to time though :(

im thinking 99% of it is tosh. Ive had a bit of a rough time in recent years, a mate i knew from school has just turned up dismembered in a river, i lost my father new years eve, my daughter had cancer when she was 3 (all clear now though) and my ex girlfriend was raped by child murderer ian huntley. I feel like job from the bible story! Maybe its punishment for leaving the religion i was brought up to believe?

Christ, I'm sorry to hear all that!
I don't think it hurts anyone to have a little faith, whatever that may be.

sh*t dude, you've been through it. I'm sorry about your dad and glad to hear your daughter's ok. You say ex-girlfriend, if you were with her at the time then that must have been hell, made even worse by the police's incompetence.

There's a few times my life seems to have turned to poo, nothing as bad as what has happened to you, but there always is an end to it. It is impossible for you to have brought any of this on yourself (unlike some of my problems  ) and the mere fact that I haven't been struck by lightening pretty much proves that there is no god.

Not that I think religion is rubbish, it has its place and no matter how crappy you feel you will always find a welcome. You don't have to take the god stuff seriously.

thanks guys, im not complaining or feeling sorry for myself, i know some of the things seem hard to believe but there is more tragedy ive missed out there. I had been split from my ex a couple of years when that happened to her. She was my first proper love back then. I think its made me a stronger person and nothing i consider trivial really bothers me anymore.
