UPDATE

Ok so replaced the strut top mount, and after the nightmare last time, have only torqued them to 25 lbft, as opposed to 30 stated in the manual which stripped two of the holes last time.

Also discovered the anti-roll bar link arm needed replacing as the top ball joint has gone.

So with these bits done... I STILL get the knoncking noise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next up then will be checking the engine mounts as has been mentioned. I downloaded a Haynes though it doesn't cover the v6 so I assume I can't rely on it's talk of engine mounts, unless any of you know if they are the same as on either of the described post 1999 'XU' or 'EW' engines?

I think you might have the earlier top mount. The Haynes you probably downloaded is for early D9s, if you didn't sort out Service Box access yet then have a compare on here http://peugeot406coupe.nl/catalogus/

I shall try and explain the knocking in more detail;

The noise is a single clonk when I accelerate or brake. For example, if I was to drive down one road it would clonk as I pull off then not do so again, despite turns or bumps, until I brake, then not again until I accelerate again. It's a single clonk and not constant, and it will not do it if I accelerate or brake very slowly. From the drivers seat it sounds like it's coming from the front right and you can even feel it slightly through the pedal.

Will check all your ideas, should have it over the pit tomorrow. how about the lowermovement limiter? Saw this mention in Haynes and says check it's tight and all, but if not could this allow for slight engine movement as described?

if u can hear feel a jolt thru the floor its normaly a bottom engine mount or in other words used engine roll restrictor /botom mount/ back mount ,
take your pick :lol:

just check the back mount or get someone to drive the car forward slowwly and watch the engine to see if it jolts
