Cracked Windscreen

Post by Catflem »

Bloody windscreen cracked today, its started out by the tax disc, and has now worked its way up about a third of the windscreen. The mot runs out next month, and I don't know if its going to fail on this or not (its not directly in the drivers line of vision).

I'm fully comp, but I think my excess is about £200, so I'm thinking about paying for the replacement out of my own pocket

Has anyone had a screen replaced on a 406 D9, and if so how much did it cost you ?.

Bloomin ek, £200 through insurers thats harsh.
ialways thought average was £50.

ask at your local scrapyards some breakers can actualy fit screens, saves a few quid,
shame your not near Manchester as iknow someone that fits them in 5 mins for £35. its just a case of buying the screen.

it wouidnt be a fail on the mot if its not in the drivers view,
ask the Mot tester before booking it in for his opinion

Result :)

Just read the small print of my insurance policy, and it looks like I pay the first £75, and they pay the rest. So its not as bad as I first thought.

I'll do as you suggest by having a chat with the MOT guy before I submit the car - I've just got to find a decent place for mots first as I'm new to the area.

Cheers lozz - I'll give the superglue a try, I've got a few bottles of it kicking around.

I've lived abroad for a number of years and don't have a clue about what the UK mot's involve these days, but I've just found a site that might be worth reading through

Its Tricky with windscreens on the Mot side of things.
some testers couid fail it saying its Dangeraus.
ive sent em through with cracked screens and theyd passed, one tester even said fit smaller blades so the wipers dont touch the crack, good tip that,
best off asking the tester for his opinion before booking it in tho . (No harm asking him/her. )

the only way to stop the crack from spreading is to drill a small hole at the end as the crack cant jump.

Good tip - thanks

The 2 companies that my insurance company deal with are both 40 odd miles away, but both companies will do home visits. The drawback is that it can't be wet when they fit the screen.............. that might be difficult, I live in Aberdeenshire, its always bloody wet up here

A cracked windscreen is supposed to be an MOT fail - the windscreen isn't just for seeing through while you don't get wet - it's a structural device, and is a deflective device - transparent armour for your face. A crack in it is a reduction in its structural integrity - if you suddenly found yourself in a situation where the windscreen should save you from something (i.e. big object falls off the back of a lorry) a crack is the difference between the windscreen smashing (but staying put), and the windscreen folding inwards. A perfectly intact windscreen might prevent the object entering the car.

A chipped windscreen isn't an MOT fail, but it will turn into a crack sooner or later, simply through the normal day-to-day vibrations involved in driving.

Don't risk it - if Autoglass (or the like) can't repair a chip, get the windscreen replaced. If the windscreen has a crack in it, of any length, get it replaced.
