Both of my 406s (the previous XUD, the current HDi) needed an alternator at about 140k.

My HDi has averaged nearly £800 per year in servicing. Main items (since 2005) were: alternator (£400), bottom pulley (£300), cam belt etc. (£550. this is the only thing that I didn't wait until it was broken before fixing), brakes (everything) (£500), a set of tyres, an exhaust back section, diff seal (£100), immobiliser aerial (£150 -- got ripped off by Peugeot).

So for £800, with four good tyres, good exhaust, and 12 months MOT there's not really much more you can ask. As mentioned above: be paranoid about the cambelt (and tensioners and water pump). Otherwise I'd just run it till summat busts.

Id hope to do majority of servicing and maintenance myself as im failry handy with a spanner so alternator, brakes, exhausts should be a driveway job i'm hoping, just to keep costs down. I'll buy an alternator from a parts place to keep in the cupboard till mine needs changing.

i think it should be a good bargain for 800 quid. find out tomorrow i guess!

Looks very smart. Must be one of the very last of them too, with reasonable mileage, could easliy keep you going for a few years yet.

My bro paid about the same for his 'S' reg 1.9 TD estate, with slightly higher mileage. He's had it for nearly 2 years now & reckons it's about the best buy he's ever had.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)

1.9 turbodiesel will produce a lot more torque than a 2.0 petrol, hence the greater ability to pull the car forward.

Sam had also tuned up Bernard by increasing the boost pressure on the turbo, so he'll have had more horsepower than a standard 1.9 anyway.

I reckon my 406 had 130ish bhp.
I've seen well tuned XUD's running 18psi pull high 120's bhp. Mine was running 22psi.

If I pulled off in second and raped the clutch and left the revs go past the 'drop off' zone in 3rd I could get to 60 in about 9s maybe less.

Don't forget the 1.9 gearbox is very short ratio'd because the 1.9 has so little power as standard.
