suprised its still around at that price,

its on a 06 plate wonder why its so cheap ! :?
The mileage is quoted as 29731

But the engine was changed at 220k.

So either the engine has done 29731, total approx. 249731 miles, or it has done 297310 in an auto-trader style typo.

Still a lot of car for the money.

Iwas thinking along the lines of ex taxi,
perhaps,

but iwouidnt let that put me off it tbh, alot of taxi drivers are looking after there motors these days so ive noticed,
no holes in dash or holes in the bumpers like the old days,

Ibet that wouid be a 4-5 k priced motor if it wasnt for the mileage,

I've now had a decent look at a C5 estate boot. No chance of fitting the folding seats in, due to the spare wheel well being offset to the driver's side rather than central as in the 406.

Bugger.

Also looking like a 7 seater is going to be a must-have for a good while yet, even though we only have the 2 children at home.

Bugger x 2.

Keep the 406 waue.

you know it makes sense,

for what money youve put into the 406 and all that time and effort why give up on it,
you couid buy something else and you couid end up back to square 1 with all the Niggles,

ive had enough of this car that ive got somedays ijust think of flinging it on ebay.
iwill bare with it as iwont get anywhere near back what ive paid for it

Worst thing iever did was get rid of my old 406 it was old but very reliable.

as the saying goes Better the devil you know. itotaly agree with.

In some ways it does, but there are a lot of things that I'd get from a decent 2.2 C5 that I can't have from my car. I think the ideal solution would be to get a 2.2 HDi Exec 406 & retrofit the extra seats, but one of those with under 100k would be near £3000, & I can pick up a decent C5 hatch with high spec for around £1500.

To be happy with my car I'd need:

New Bonnet - slight bubbles started underneath
6-8 parking dents removed - apparently it isn't very easy on Peugeots either
Remap - which would still leave me at the same level as a standard 2.2
Subframe bushes & anti-roll bar bushes - advised at last MOT & another 8 months of driving round our way will kill them off.

& on top of all that there are the things that I just can't get on mine due to the lack of prewiring like the door cruise control, lights workin & a tidier electric seat installation. Admittedly the door lights could be solved by fitting Rapier cards & the seat issue would be sorted if I managed to get SRi seats, but that all comes along once in a blue moon & the cruise control is pretty much an impossibility without throwing hundreds to a garage.

Having done the arithmatic, a decent 2.2 C5 that I've seen would cost £1900 (+£100 if they do the cambelt), £150 would get the windows redone (loyalty discount from the guys that did the 406), £100 to transfer the plate & whatever the deFAP costs. Even if I had to get the pros to give me the 180bhp remap, I'd still be left with a 180bhp monster that will probably give me better mpg due to the better power band (my 110 has to be pushed hard going uphill at motorway speeds) & I get the floaty comfortable suspension which can handle our speed bumps. The C5 panels also seem to be more resistant to the dints than the Pug's.

If I can get away with having just the 5 seats...

Doesn't look too bad, but (& I know it sounds a bit snobbish) it's over 100k when my car hasn't hit 90k yet. The C5s I've been looking at have been the same money, but none have evn hit the 90k mark yet. Plus the body work seems to be much stronger - that 406 probably looks as pebble-dashed down the side as my one, which puts me back in the realms of getting body work done (I know, I'm a fussy git).

The only thing I've found that seems to be quite common on the body work is that a lot seem to have corner scuffs on the bumpers & that's proably down to how square they are - look at one from above & the shape is nearly a perfect rectangle - but bumper's can either be replaced or painted relatively cheaply compared to what it'd cost to tidy mine up.

This was also one of the things that I really liked about my Zafira - the big fat mouldings on the doors & arches did a great job of protecting the bodywork from ignorant door-openers. If going for another, I'd actually get an older one before they started painting them as the black plastic doesn't mark, but a friend at work had scuffs galore down his body coloured mouldings.

Life would be so much easier for me if I was either:

a) a mechanic

b) a bodyshop man

or c) both, with a driveway.

If I was, I wouldn't have spent so much fixing the 406 & wouldn't object to paying out for a new bonnet & doors to replace my damaged bits as I'd just be able to fit & paint it all myself & have it looking mint.

I know it all sounds a bit anal, but I've spent years saving up to have a healthy deposit to buy a house & still not got one, so I at least want to have a car that's nice that I can take a bit of pride in. After all, until the house prices take a hell of a hit, the car will be my most expensive possession, even if it isn't the most valuable.

Just to give anyone that's groaning a bit of an insight into what I'm like for looking after things; back in 1999 I was multidrop driving delivering Klix coffee. In October we all got new vans. I used to finish my run relatively early & cleaned my van every day (even in the wheelarches & the roof). 6 months later I ended up back in the warehouse & while the other 5 vans were all a bit yellowy with sticky bits all over the dash & ingrained dirt in the cab, mine still looked as fresh as the day I got it - even the wheelarches were still white inside!

I know brand new cars lose a fortune as soon as you put your name on the V5, but I reckon if I got one, it'd still be in A1 condition years down the road.

Why the liking to the MK1 C5's - they aren't the most "robust" car on the road?

Neither is a 406, but a higher spec, 2.2 HDi C5 can be bought (& insured) for a lot less than a 406 & having owned one myself, the ride is superb.

A V70 would either be much older, much higher mileage or a big engined petrol at the same price as a C5
