Pipe boxing

Post by Doggy »

I've been trying without success to find a supplier of products like this: http://www.pendock.co.uk/Pipe_Boxing_~_ ... spx?id=762
(None of my DIY versions have looked good enough / proved durable in bathrooms, to date).

I've found 8 manufacturers websites, but none will sell small quantities and I've had no luck finding local / localish stockists, (lots of builders merchants, 'used to do it').

Any ideas, peeps?

speak to your local electrical wholesaler and ask about dado trunking, or skirting trunking, its not cheap but is effectively the same stuff its just box section pvc or upvc, most manufacturers of the stuff make all sorts of sections for all sorts of applications, worth a try.

Pendock Profiles do specialist joinery boxing for Hospitals and Schools etc and is bought by large contractors in the trade. It's good but expensive and unlikely they'll supply you a small bit.

UPVC Refrigeration pipework boxing is fairly neat and tidy and comes with Elbows/Sets etc. you could try a Refrigeration Wholesaler?

PS - don't drill into your pipework whilst fixing said concealing products

In my first house the previous owner had stuck pipes in all the corners of the kitchen, I made boxes out of 3/8" ply and 1" square laths, then tiled over the top of most of it.

In Croatia they just plaster the pipes into the walls and concrete them into floors and ceilings, even steel central heating pipes. It's all nice, neat and tidy, until it goes wrong...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. 8)

Skirting trunking may work for some of the smaller bits, but I've got a waste pipe or two to 'disappear' & one bit's needed for the flow / return pipes to a boiler, so maybe not PVC in this case.....

Haven't tried the aircon boys yet - I'll give the outfit we use a bell tomorrow.

I think Steve's suggestion would be the best; screw a baton to the wall either side, screw a baton to the face edge of one piece of ply and fix this to one of the wall batons, then screw on your final bit of ply. A circular saw makes life a lot easier for getting a straight cut although that won't matter if you're tiling over the top. Make sure you coat the ply in diluted PVA before tiling!

That would be the perfect answer if I was going to tile it, but I can't really do that in these instances, because:

1). 1st bathroom: was tiled 5+ years ago, I can't match the tiles & the boxing is horizontal at floor level...
2). 2nd bathroom: the structure I need has to form a step leading to the shower enclosure, as well as boxing in the horzontal sink / shower waste.
3). Utility: I need to box in the vertical h + c water pipes that run from ceiling to worktop adjacent to the boiler. At the top of the boiler I need to 'extend' this to cover the gas, flow+rtn pipes & wiring. This room isn't tiled.

Hence I was looking for something durable, that looks 'finished' and could form a step, (assuming a substantial support structure underneath), so it's just a cover.......

It's always a barsteward when you can't get any more tiles. Also sticking stuff behind tiles could leaving you singing that old Croatian favourite - "The poo is seeping through / and there's f**k all I can doooo".

I think it'll be interesting to see what you can up with anyway.
