But I was a BT engineer, I'm sure I've mentioned this a few hundred times, so I can only think that this is in some way typical behaviour for a BT engineer. I guess keeping out of date stuff going with zero budget was all I did so perhaps it is.

In my dad's day it was find a hobby 'cos you're going to get bored otherwise.

In my day it was try to strike a balance between overtime and home/car maintenance 'cos you sure as hell can't afford to pay anyone to do anything for you. Try not to let the corporate bullshit get to you. Drop anything that looks tricky like a hot potato or you'll be hauled over the coals for taking too long on a job - remember it's stats stats stats!!!

These days it's work all the overtime you can, do the DIY when you're not at work, sleep when you're dead. Try to remain invisible yet be indispensable or you'll be looking for another job. Try not to let the corporate bullshit drive you to suicide. It will take too long, you won't get there in time, there won't be any stores and the records will be wrong - they've got to blame someone so it'll be you. Keep an eye on your working hours, they might be changed at any time and the last person to know will be you.

Don't sweat it, no offence taken

It was probably so old it was made out of Bakelite  Alternatively, pay peanuts - get monkeys. And my brother is still working for them, even though he doesn't need to.
