My new D8 LX - Progress so far

Post by gumby6371 »

Ok I've had the car for a couple of weeks now so I've had a chance to find all the gremlins and I've got to say nothing nasty has jumped out at me so far. Planning to keep her pretty standard for now except for my Coupe alloys and D9 vents which have been fitted.
Oil and air filter look brand new which matches service history so I'll give her a service in the summer.

Things I've picked up on so far in no particular order are;

Sill seal clips broken - Yes you're all shocked that such a brilliantly designed robust part can break aren't you!!!
Clock works but backlight blown
Stereo works but backlight blown
Speedo sticky/erratic between 38 and 60 ish
Small exhaust blow
Small PS fluid leak
Small oil leak from 'somewhere' down the back of the engine
Serpentine belt looks a bit 'tired' but no squeal (getting changed along with precautionary timing belt change when funds allow)
Minor damage to front bumper (warm weather repair)

Jobs tackled;

Took my speedo out looking for dry joints as advised by Gary, found nothing so cleaned up the contacts, reassembled and hey presto all seems to be working fine :cheesy: (The guy I bought the car off only used it for the saturday morning trip to tesco so he quite possibly never noticed the fault as it was fine until you hit 38mph)

Took my clock out to change the bulb, turned bulb holder to get at said bulb and the plastic retaining bit disintergrated before my eyes :cry: I'll see if a replacement 'falls into my pocket' next time I'm at the breakers. Isn't it strange that you never need to know the time until you have no way of knowing what it is!!!

Aquired a dozen clips for sill seal from local pug dealer and refitted the offending article. The guy at the dealers couldn't be bothered to find the price so he said just stick them in your pocket - bargain!!!

Located the exhaust leak to where the pipe goes into the silencer, at least I think it's a silencer and not a CAT, did early D8's have a CAT? My exhaust is 1 piece from the manifold to the back box. Any how my mate is going to do a temporary weld until I have more funds.

Oil and PS fluid levels are fine so I'll monitor it, if I'm suddenly losing any I'll look at it then.

Cash outlay so far £3.50 for 10 dash bulbs, handy hint, my LMF sell these bulbs at £1 for 1 or 10 for £3.50 so always check for bulk discounts when you need some. I think it's the same for head lamp bulbs aswell.
