DVD recorders hard drives

Post by FarmerPug »

I took apart a dvd recorder because its component connections at the front were not responding, i took off the lid and for a toshiba i found a surprisingly crappy dvd drive, but here was the broken pcb:

It had the problem from new and this is what had been causing it.

While at that the hard drive inside was noticed:

its nearly at full capacity and most of its rubbish, i see some connections usb to SATA on ebay, but is this hard drive a SATA connection? Has anyone ever done this with a dvd recorder or sky box?

Yep that's IDE, otherwise known as PATA (Parallel ATA).

I've changed hard drives in a PVR/DVD recorder box before but it wasn't a Sky one.

IDE it is. May be able to connect it to an old PC, mate. You're looking for ribbon cable about the same width as the biggest connector in the back of the hard drive. Alternatively you could try using an IDE-SATA adapter but that's just a waste of money IMHO.

I've ordered one of those, i have a right few top gear episodes recorded onto it, i think since the botswana special i have recorded every top gear since, and its the BBC2 version so no annoying adverts, at the moment the hard drive is filling up but i don't want to format it yet.

a media player, what are they for the living room tv has a hard drive connection and for a while i had a hard drive in this connection, but then my laptop needed repaired and i had to back it up and the backup is on that hard drive, but it can't go back into the tv because it would format the backup.

This is the most up to date one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sumvision-Cyc ... 2a1901f9f6 but it's got built in 8gig hard drive.

I got a 500gig hard drive that i hook up to mine and it will play any tv/movie format i've been able to download :supafrisk: so far, you just attach it to your tv with a hdmi cable or other and view files from hard drive, memory stick and the like.

IDE.

It can be replaced in the DVD box, though you'll probably need to format it in the format that the box accepts (eg. FAT32/HFS) and install whatever software/OS was on it. Safest is to try and ghost/clone the original HDD.
