My collie is two years old now i've noticed him get nervous if fireworks go off but this morning when it thundered he ended up in bed with me shivvering then when he came down stairs he hid under the stairs, is this normal behaviour for collies? reason i ask mainly is this.
we went to a civil war reinactment on Saundersfoot beach Saturday and he was jittery when they were playing drums and once the first cannon went off he went ape sh*t to the point i think he scratched someones car trying to jump in the boot, he was doing summersaults on the lead, he almost pulled us both off the harbour wall and i nearly broke his neck trying to hold him by his collar there was no controlling him... good job the pub on the peer allowed dogs because thats where he went and thats where he stayed until it finished.
Scared the sh*t out of me.

My mums labrador gets that, hates loud noises like the halloween fireworks etc.
Apparently there are a couple of solutions:
- Play a CD of the noise while they are eating dinner. Start low, then get it a bit louder each time, they get used to it
- Sedatives

My collie is the same nearly 10 years old now and still barks like mad when he hears thunder, runs round the whole farm barking at the sky, its the same with fireworks, the only thing that works is to put him in the house with the tv or radio on, then he sleeps.

As for sedation he needed it on Saturday but he weighs over 20 kilos and i didn't have a wheelbarrow with me.
I on the other hand started my sedation in the form of two pints of real ale while waiting for the cannons/guns to stop.

I got a halti that goes around his snout it's brilliant at stopping him pulling on a normal walk but Saturday was just nuts he reminded me of the horses in old cowboy films that get startled and up on their hind legs they go.... I normally have complete control over him but he was to scared to listen.

I wern't the only one to retreat to the pub with a dog mind i saw a couple walk in with a staff that got nervous and someone said there was a few more too..... Needless to say i'll be careful where i take him from now on and make sure he's indoors with me on bonfire night and new years eve.

Theres two ways that can go.
1: he'd shiver to death in the trap.

As someone said, gradually introduce them to noises, especially as a puppy, as they arent so scared then......
My 2 year old comes quad racing with me - bikes thundering round a track and all he'll do is if im idling try and catch the exhaust fumes! but rest of the time he'll sit in the van fast asleep or just look out the window at the bikes going round thinking i could chase them.....

Our old golden retard Betty always got very scared if there was fireworks or thunder but she seems to be calming down a lot now (probably going deaf). We still get all the dogs rush up and try to hide under us if there's a loud noise but.. last week (while the wife was away) they let a load of fireworks off in the conference centre a mile from here and I could not get rid of the little guy all evening, he even insisted on sleeping on my bed
We have sedative paste for Betty, although last Christmas we didn't need it.
