MOT time again

Post by D9406 »

Popped the old bus into the garage for another MOT, sat back and waited. Yaaay, passed first time and no advisories.
Was a little unsure as to whether itwould pass or not as it has no Cat fitted, it was nicked earlier in the year. However the emissions ticket reported zero smoke drift and very low opacity. So, it begs the question why would you want one on a diesel? Especially as in the last 6 months that the car has been run without a cat MPG has improved, pick up is better and it generally drives easier.
1999 406 HDi 2.0 110 GTX Estate. 48k when bought, now 150K. Second owner, I've covered over 100k in it.
Clutch changed @110k, bottom pulley changed, cam belt changed, EGR blanked, cat removed, front springs changed.

Good news!

I removed the cat from mine, but TBH noticed no difference. I know that a clogged cat does have an adverse effect on pick up and reponse, but frankly wish I'd left mine alone. The exhaust smells different and the visible smoke level, (particularly in following cars headlights), is definitely greater, though nothing like enough to be a worry at MOT time.

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)
